EastEnders legend Adam Woodyatt: “I don’t really think you can have Ian Beale without Cindy”

As a long-time EastEnders enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the show since its inception, I must say that the potential rekindling of Ian Beale and Cindy Beale’s tumultuous love story has me absolutely giddy with anticipation. The on-again, off-again drama between these two characters is as iconic as the Queen Vic itself, and their complex relationship is a testament to the show’s enduring appeal.

Adam Woodyatt, the actor behind the renowned EastEnders character, Ian Beale, has expressed a desire for his on-screen character to reconnect romantically with his ex-wife Cindy Beale, portrayed by Michelle Collins.

On Christmas Day, the BBC One soap revealed Cindy’s secret relationships with Junior Knight (Micah Balfour) and George Knight (Colin Salmon), as well as her ongoing feelings for George. This shocking revelation was made known to the Beale-Knight families. Later in the day, Cindy was viciously attacked and left for dead by an unknown attacker.

On Thursday’s broadcast of Boxing Day, it was disclosed that Cindy managed to survive the violent assault. The series has since announced that the perpetrator will be unveiled in the narrative for the 40th anniversary episodes scheduled for February 2025.

However, could it be Ian who attacked Cindy, arguably the love of his life?

At a recent press gathering, actor Adam Woodyatt shared what guidance he’d give his character in light of Cindy’s actions causing distress for Ian.

Woodyatt said Ian should “run, leave.”

The actor also added this comment: “Ian and Cindy’s story is one of love. I hope it continues, finds a resolution, and they find a way to overcome their challenges because I strongly believe that Ian is incomplete without Cindy. In my opinion, they are better together as a couple rather than separate entities.

Later on, during their conversation about the upcoming 40th anniversary, Woodyatt shared an instance that felt like coming full circle to him in his current job.

Amid construction work at the set, he has been made to move dressing rooms, noting:  “I was really, really chuffed because I’m now in Gretchen Franklin’s old dressing room. So I’ve when I started out, I was in there, there were three of us. There was me, Dave Scarborough [who played Mark Fowler] and Paul Medford [who played Kelvin Carpenter] all crammed into a dressing room, but now isn’t big enough for one person, and they’ve got three of us into it, and the dressing rooms upstairs were sort of like where the stars were. That’s where Wendy [Richard, who played Pauline Fowler] and Anna [Wing, who played Lou Beale] and Gretchen [Franklin, who played Ethel Skinner] were.”

Now, Adam’s finally made it to where those stars were. Only right, for an EastEnders legend.
