As a long-time soap opera enthusiast with a knack for empathizing with characters that resonate deeply, I can genuinely appreciate Max Bowden’s decision to step away from playing Ben Mitchell on EastEnders. Having followed his journey over the years, it’s evident that he poured his heart and soul into the role, which took an emotional toll, much like the character itself.
Max Bowden, the actor who recently bid farewell from his role as Ben Mitchell on EastEnders, has clarified the reasons behind his departure from the BBC soap.
In an interview with The Lewis Nicholls Show, Bowden discussed his departure from the position, confessing that he felt “prepared” and it seemed like “the right moment for a break”.
After spending over five years on the show, Bowden remarked: “I filmed close to 600 episodes, which is a huge amount, and I felt it was past due for a break. The character seemed weary, I was weary, and perhaps the producers were growing tired of my constant exhaustion.”
He added: “From an honest perspective, I think a lot of it was that I needed to go for a bit. I needed to go work on me, get myself back to a place of really good mental health, focus on healing and also be a dad.”
When discussing his character, Bowden confessed that portraying someone like Ben, who has deep emotional ties to many individuals due to shared traumatic experiences, can be mentally draining.
“What mattered most, Bowden stated, was that my time had come. I was extremely fatigued, as I mentioned before, and I didn’t feel like myself, I truly didn’t. Today, the real Max you see was more like a ghost, and they, as well as I, understood this.”
As a long-time fan of “EastEnders,” I was deeply saddened to learn about the departure of the beloved character, Bowden, earlier this year. The news of his arrest for fraud and subsequent imprisonment in America hit me hard, as it seemed like such a sudden and unexpected turn of events. It’s heartbreaking to think about the impact this must have on his friends, family, and husband in Walford.
Following the intense moment, Bowden penned down: “Alright everyone. Here we are! What an incredible journey it’s been! I appreciate you welcoming Ben into your hearts and letting me share my interpretation with you. Thank you!”
“For five fantastic years, I was part of the BBC EastEnders family, learning invaluable insights about myself and my cherished craft. During challenging personal periods, this experience provided immense solace, and I remain eternally thankful for it.”
He went on to express: “I truly cannot thank everyone enough for their unwavering support, as the show’s fans are so dedicated, compassionate, and committed. This passion fuels us actors to strive for improvement, so from the depths of my heart, I sincerely appreciate every person who has sent positivity in my direction over the past five years – you all hold a special place in my heart.”
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
