EastEnders’ Michelle Collins on Cindy’s reaction to David Wicks return: ‘It knocks her off kilter’

As a lifelong EastEnders enthusiast who has seen countless episodes and lived through the tumultuous saga of Cindy Beale and David Wicks, I can hardly contain my excitement as these two iconic characters are set to reunite after 27 long years!

Fans of EastEnders, eagerly await a heartwarming reunion between beloved characters Cindy Beale and David Wicks. After being apart for 27 years, they’ll meet again on screen next week!

Earlier this year, it was verified that Michael French took on the character of charismatic outlaw, David, whom Cindy initially intended to embark on a fresh life with.

Collins further shares his experience collaborating with co-star French once more, delving into the factors that initially drew her on-screen persona to David.

Read on below for the full chat, ahead of what is sure to be an exciting set of episodes.

How does Cindy feel when she sees David for the first time?

Cindy is taken aback to her core upon encountering David for the first time in years, as it’s a complete surprise and something she hadn’t anticipated since their last meeting was back in 1996. The shock has left her feeling off balance.

What are Cindy’s abiding memories of David?

Her lasting recollections aren’t positive, as he abandoned her at Waterloo Station without keeping his word. He didn’t accompany her nor provide the support he had promised.

Instead, David had a change of heart and decided against it. To put it bluntly, he showed cowardice! Cindy felt deeply disappointed and angered by him for his actions. It’s worth noting that David was one of the few individuals whom Cindy held a deep affection for, and his actions caused her significant pain.

What advice does George give her when she’s panicking about seeing David again?

“George tells her not to be ridiculous and to get out there and face her demons.

George encourages Cindy, telling her she’s a brave woman who shouldn’t shy away from David. He suggests that she’s entitled to an explanation from him and urges her to confront him, demand to know why he’s here, and express herself to David.

Tell us about the moment she and David come face-to-face.

When Cindy and David meet up, Cindy moves towards him, leaving David in such a state of surprise that he feels like he’s encountered a spirit from the past! Both are taken aback by the encounter.

They exchange surprised glances, both exclaiming, ‘Wow!’ It’s been 27 years since they last met, and unexpectedly, Cindy was the one David encountered in the Square. Despite the initial shock, a hint of a smile graced his face when he collected himself…

What was it about David that Cindy was so attracted to back in the day?

In their earlier days, they were incredibly dynamic together, sharing a captivating connection that left everyone spellbound. It wasn’t just that they were intriguing individually, but rather, they complemented each other so well that they seemed equally threatening – a pair to watch out for.

In the ’90s, these two individuals, both feeling a sense of loneliness and seeking adventure, likely found each other. However, this shared desire for excitement may have been the very reason behind their inevitable downfall.

Do you think David’s arrival is going to ruffle feathers in Ian and Cindy’s relationship?

Cindy yearns for tranquility and an end to the chaos in her life, and believes that by establishing a relationship with Ian, she could find the stability she’s sought all along.

Ian serves as a comforting presence for her, but since Cindy thrives on risk and excitement – exactly what David Wicks offers – it’s uncertain how long this dynamic will continue.

Did you have fun working with Michael French again?

It was great collaborating with Michael once more, as his acting skills are top-notch and he has an infectious sense of humor with a mischievous edge. He’s always dedicated and enjoys exploring different approaches to our scenes together.

We tackled some challenging tasks side by side, and I truly savored every moment. It’s a pleasure to collaborate with you once more.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
