As an actress playing Nicola Mitchell, I can confidently say that stepping into Albert Square has been nothing short of exhilarating. With a career spanning several decades, I’ve learned to navigate the complexities of human nature with a deft hand, and Nicola is no exception.
Next week on EastEnders, Nicola Mitchell appears to be headed for Walford with plans to stir things up significantly!
In a new role, Laura Doddington is portraying the former spouse of Teddy, played by Roland Manookian. She immediately takes charge, not wasting a moment as she involves their sons, Harry (Elijah Holloway) and Barney (Lewis Bridgeman), in the proceedings.
As Teddy and Sharon Watts continue their playful banter, tensions are brewing between the long-time resident of Albert Square and the brash new arrival. So, get ready for an exciting week filled with drama!
Apart from needing to stay cautious, Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine) is pleased that she gets to work alongside her new colleagues on the set.
Read on as the actress teases what to expect from the fiery Nicola.
What brings Nicola to Walford?
Nicola recently returned from Bali and received word that Harry might get arrested. Eager to assist, she heads to Walford using her distinctive, outspoken style as Nicola Mitchell.
Why didn’t she tell Teddy and the boys that she was heading over?
It’s fair to assume she isn’t highly regarded among them, which is why there haven’t been any messages like, “I’ll be over to lend a hand.
When Nicola shows up, she immediately assumes control. What makes her so determined to take the initiative when assisting Harry?
After the divorce from Teddy, Nicola has taken time to reflect on herself and her actions. Her deepest desire is to reunite her family as a cohesive unit again. To demonstrate her unwavering support and love for her children, she intends to mend what’s been broken. As a natural problem solver, this is the role she has always filled – a fixer!
As Nicola recognizes that Penny is implicated in his arrest, we wonder how she chooses to handle the situation with her. Here’s one way to rephrase it: When Nicola discovers that Penny is connected to his arrest, we’re curious about how she decides to manage dealing with her.
Nicola is fiercely protective of her kids, much like a cat guarding its prey. Unlike Penny, she’s not taking chances with Harry, given her mistrust, especially since her father is in law enforcement.
Nicola closely monitors Penny’s actions, and from what I can tell, she tends to overpower others through intimidation. She often teases Penny, and when she identifies a vulnerability, she reveals it.
What is Nicola’s dynamic with Teddy like?
Nicola has strong feelings for Teddy and wishes he was back in her life. However, they were never the picture of a harmonious couple. Nicola is often controlling towards others, but she’s found it harder to control Teddy as she once did, which makes her very angry.
Over time, they grew up side by side in their relationship, discovering themselves along the way. This shared history allows them to react instantly to one another’s actions, often predicting the outcomes even before they occur.
Teddy is trying to move forward after the divorce. Is that hard for Nicola?
It’s deeply disappointing and frustrating for me. You know how Nicola is accustomed to getting what she desires? There’s a common characteristic in us all, something like, “I desire it. Why can’t I get it?” As we grow older, most of us learn to control that impulse, but Nicola hasn’t. Thus, regarding Teddy, her thoughts might be, “I want him. Why can’t I have him?
How does she feel when Teddy tells Barney her secret?
Nicola finds herself both humiliated and enraged, and she feels vulnerable. Only Teddy has the ability to make her feel this way. Normally, she’s always staying one move ahead, but when Teddy does this, she’s caught off guard.
Nicola is determined to regain custody of her sons, but due to Teddy’s recent disclosure, she must now work on rebuilding Barney’s trust. Ideally, Nicola would prefer things to proceed smoothly, but this complicates matters for her.
What happens when she meets Sharon?
The atmosphere is lively since they instantly collide! Working with Letitia Dean is a joy, and our initial scene features my all-time favorite line I’ve ever spoken on camera! Nicola doesn’t seem to be fond of other women, and she exhibits no interest in female friendships or the female support network.
In the beginning, it might seem like any random woman is on the receiving end of her rudeness. However, once she discovers that Sharon and Teddy have a little flirtation going on, she views Sharon as an obstacle to eliminate. Determined to win Teddy back for herself, Nicola will stop at nothing. So, Sharon, beware – you’re in her sights!
What does Nicola make of the rest of the Mitchells?
At first, she’s observing everyone carefully. She’s familiar with Phil due to his renown, and she’s curious about him, wondering if he can be influenced. As for Honey, she notices that this is a kind individual whom she could potentially control if necessary.
“She understands that Honey wouldn’t refuse her invitation to lunch, similar to when she impromptu joins her. Since she was unaware of Billy before, she wishes to meet Teddy’s brother and familiarize herself with him. Primarily, she wants to explore if there’s a chance to leverage any circumstance to her benefit.
What has it been like to work with Roland, Elijah and Lewis?
The experience has been simply heavenly. What’s struck me is the camaraderie among the cast, reminiscent of a theatrical troupe. Everyone here is incredibly supportive. Roland, Elijah, and Lewis have been nothing short of wonderful. During my initial weeks with some challenging monologues, they were always there to help, offering support and even running lines until I felt comfortable. It seems like we’ve already formed a bond that feels like family.
What can we expect from Nicola Mitchell in her first few weeks in Albert Square?
As a discerning movie critic, I find myself captivated by the character of Nicola in this film. She’s a woman with a keen intellect and a quick wit, unafraid to voice her opinions. In other words, she’s not one to be easily intimidated or overshadowed. Expect a character who isn’t afraid to make an impression and leave a lasting mark on the silver screen.
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
