Attention: This discussion may reveal plot points from tonight’s EastEnders episode (May 21, 2025) which can be found on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
In the latest episode of EastEnders, I found myself deeply moved by a significant shift. The Branning-Beales were thrust into a heart-wrenching new world.
Lauren Branning (played by Jacqueline Jossa) became concerned that her newborn son, Jimmy, might be visually impaired as she spotted some unusual traits in his eyes during their first two weeks together.
As a dedicated cinephile, I found myself grappling with the same issue as Jimmy, struggling to bond during breastfeeding, and having trouble concentrating. However, my worries were brushed aside by my partner, Peter Beale (Thomas Law), and our health visitor.
As a film enthusiast, I’d been advised to be vigilant for any indications of postnatal depression in Lauren. Unfortunately, I found both her and Jimmy absent – a fact that resonated with our elder son Louie (Jake McNally), who noticed his mom occasionally taking a pill from a bottle hidden under the sink.
In a hospital setting, recovering addict Lauren urgently requested that Jimmy undergo an examination. However, her plea didn’t bear fruit until her midwife, Hanan (played by Isabel Adomakoh Young), noticed her and reached out to Peter. Peter then shared information about the tablets with Hanan.
Peter came along accompanied by his father Adam Woodyatt (Ian), family acquaintance Kellie Bright (Linda Carter), and the group was clarified by Lauren: She had just been consuming folic acid tablets, having placed them under the sink in a moment of weariness.

Only when Linda observed something concerning with Jimmy’s eyes did Hanan become alert, prompting them to consult a medical professional.
As Jimmy underwent an examination with both his parents by his side, Ian continued to make disparaging comments about Lauren. In fact, he cautioned Linda to be aware of any Branning characteristics that might emerge in her niece Annie, who is Lauren’s half-sister.
During Jimmy’s checkup with his parents looking on, Ian maintained a steady flow of critical comments about Lauren. He even advised Linda to stay vigilant for any traits similar to those of Branning in her niece Annie, who is Lauren’s half-sister.
After a diagnosis was made concerning Jimmy, Peter hastily exited the consultation room, leaving Linda behind to await the arrival of Lauren and Jimmy.
Lauren heard the doctor explain that Jimmy was diagnosed with a condition called optic nerve chorioretinal coloboma, which classifies him as legally blind or severely vision-impaired.
“He’s blind,” concluded Lauren in devastation.
In Albert Square, Ian shared the news with his mother, Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth). Interestingly, Peter’s mother, Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), provided an unusual display of empathy, offering comfort as they both processed the circumstances together.
In the meantime, the doctor reassured Lauren, who felt remorseful, that the methadone she had been given couldn’t be responsible for Jimmy’s state; however, it was plausible that substance abuse during pregnancy might have resulted in his condition.
Reflecting on her past morphine usage, Lauren found it unbearable to contemplate the potential harm it might have caused her young son.
In the solitude of the bathroom, I made a solemn promise to myself, swearing off even the tiniest pill of paracetamol. With a heavy heart, I implored for divine mercy from above.
However, a glimmer of optimism emerged as Jimmy managed to attach and nurse, even though he couldn’t see his actions due to a visual impediment.
After that, the lights suddenly went out, casting Lauren and Jimmy into darkness, symbolizing the last few significant moments for Lauren as she prepared to confront what was coming next.
At the end of the episode, EastEnders played a soothing, lullaby rendition of their signature theme song, composed by Simon May.
Star Jossa delivered a touching portrayal throughout the series as Lauren struggled to secure her baby’s future. However, will Lauren and Peter be able to unite their efforts to assist Jimmy?
