As a seasoned cinephile who has seen more soap operas than I care to count, I must admit that the latest twist in EastEnders has piqued my interest. The return of David Wicks (Michael French) and his apparent intention to flee Walford once again is reminiscent of a classic soap opera trope – the well-intentioned hero who, despite good intentions, ultimately fails those he seeks to help.
Next week on EastEnders, Michael French’s character David Wicks is planning another exit from Walford, following closely on the heels of his return to the troubled life of daughter Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) and a confrontation with the murderer Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman).
Amid Bianca’s battle with her mental health and her determined efforts to exonerate her half-sibling Sonia Fowler (played by Natalie Cassidy), it was David who showed up at the exact moment when Bianca, under the influence, stumbled in the Square.
It appears that David is actively showing compassion towards Bianca, as they’ve discussed her mental health concerns, and he seems genuinely worried about her well-being.
Additionally, David confides in Kat Slater, B’s close friend, about Bianca’s concerning actions, as Kat discloses some troubling details.
David, sensing the intensity of Bianca’s conviction regarding Reiss as a potential murderer, chooses instead to speak directly with Reiss himself.
Over the course of the week, David and Bianca engage in profound discussions about Bianca’s mental health struggles, and with initial hesitation, she consents to visit a healthcare professional.
She’s happy to have David’s promise that he will stay with her, but events related to David quickly change for the worse.
Regardless of pledging to support Bianca, David eventually slips back into his usual habits when other parts of his life prove challenging.
What is it that causes David to consider leaving once more, rather than staying with Bianca who appears to be in a vulnerable position?
I’m thrilled to share that I’ll encounter my former love, Cindy Beale, portrayed by the talented Michelle Collins, in upcoming episodes. It’s mind-boggling to find out that she’s not only alive but thriving, as I was under the impression she had passed away before.
Could it be David’s return that prompts Ian Beale (played by Adam Woodyatt) to consider leaving again, given his displeasure with his half-brother’s presence? Or could some other event serve as the trigger for this decision?
I’m buzzing with anticipation about David’s trip to Walford! Will he end up leaving Bianca feeling even lonelier amidst her critical moment?
EastEnders airs these scenes from Monday 7th October 2024.
