EastEnders star says Ben Mitchell’s exit was “best way” to end chapter

As a long-time EastEnders devotee who’s seen more twists and turns than a rollercoaster ride, I must say this year has been quite the emotional rollercoaster. The exit of Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) was indeed hard to swallow, especially after his heartbreaking journey seeking cancer treatment for Lola Pearce-Brown (Danielle Harold).

2021 has been a turbulent journey for EastEnders, filled with unexpected turns and emotional upheavals for many key characters. New faces emerged, plots took unexpected twists, yet it was the departures of some fan favorites like Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) that really shook things up.

Earlier in March, Ben found himself potentially spending time in prison due to his actions involving theft and fraud, all while he was in the U.S., trying to secure cancer treatment for the late Lola Pearce-Brown (Danielle Harold).

At the 2021 National Television Awards (NTAs) on the red carpet, Clay expressed his feelings about Bowden’s departure by saying, “Indeed, it was tough. This year has definitely been strange.

He added: “It was really nice that we did some really lovely work in those scenes and I think it was a good way to finish that sort of chapter for now. See what happens.”

Concerning their relationship’s current state, they had a deep, emotional conversation, but Ben returned to his typical actions, distancing himself from Callum, suggesting that he should seek someone else who could offer love, as Ben seemed to be emotionally unavailable at the moment.

Instead of opting for the simple solution, Callum made a promise to remain patient and wait for Ben during his sentence. This decision was well-received by the show’s audience, and they appreciated the development in their relationship.

As for how things will end up panning out for them, we’ll just have to wait and see.

There are many more exciting plot developments to anticipate, as the long-standing soap opera is planning a special live episode for its 40th anniversary, scheduled to broadcast in February next year.

In reference to the upcoming special live episode, executive producer Chris Clenshaw mentioned: “Although we’re tight-lipped about the specifics of the 40th, I can assure you it will be a week filled with unexpected turns that will indelibly alter Albert Square and the lives of its residents for good.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
