What you need to know

  • Windows 11 24H2 is finally here, but there are still some known issues with it that Microsoft needs to work on.
  • One of those is an incompatibility issue with Easy Anti Cheat, used in games such as Fortnite, iRacing, and Elden Ring.
  • It only affects those using Intel’s Alder Lake (12th Gen) and above CPUs and vPro, but Microsoft has implemented a hold on those devices getting the 24H2 upgrade until a fix is applied.

As a tech enthusiast with a gaming background and a history of dealing with OS updates, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about the arrival of Windows 11 24H2. On one hand, it’s always thrilling to experience the latest features and improvements that Microsoft has been working on. On the other hand, we all know that with every new version comes its share of bugs and incompatibilities.

No matter how much testing a new version of Windows goes through, there will always be bugs. That is still the case with Windows 11 24H2, now finally available outside of Qualcomm-powered Copilot+ PCs at last.

Microsoft is addressing a specific issue on their list that may captivate video game enthusiasts, particularly those who engage with games such as Fortnite and others that utilize Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) software.

Microsoft is currently addressing a compatibility problem that has arisen between the Easy Anti-Cheat software and Windows 11, version 24H2. This software is often included with certain games to provide enhanced security and prevent cheating in multiplayer online PC games. It’s installed automatically.

Individuals encountering this problem may experience a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) while attempting to play games that utilize Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), with the error message “MEMORY_MANAGEMENT”. In simpler terms, when these users try to run EAC-enabled games, they might face an unexpected system crash (BSOD) due to a memory management issue.

The positive aspect is that you likely won’t encounter this issue. It primarily impacts systems running on Intel Alder Lake (12th Gen) and above, as well as vPro. This means that older hardware or those using AMD should not face any problems at all. Additionally, only systems utilizing EAC drivers released before April 2024 seem to be affected, suggesting a limited number of users will experience this issue.

A more convenient piece of information is that Microsoft has taken steps to minimize the number of gamers affected by this issue. They’ve imposed a compatibility block on systems potentially at risk, preventing Windows Update from installing the 24H2 update on these machines. If you attempt to use the Media Creation Tool for an update, you’ll receive a message stating your system isn’t prepared for it yet. It is advised not to manually update to version 24H2 if you’re using a system that may be affected.

It shouldn’t impact all EAC games, but why take the risk. Furthermore, it seems like the fix is to make sure all games using the anti cheat software are updated to use a newer driver that’s compatible with Windows 11 24H2.
