As a seasoned gamer who has journeyed through countless digital worlds, I can confidently say that Stacy Caballero’s work on Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is nothing short of magical. Her ability to breathe life into these intricate universes, each with their unique visual identities, is truly awe-inspiring.
Stacy Caballero, the costume designer for the series ‘Echo’, discusses her creative process behind working on ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. ComicBook interviewed this Emmy-nominated professional about designing costumes that fit within the diverse universe of Marvel Studios. ‘Echo’ is a more earthbound project, while ‘Ragnarok’ and ‘Wakanda Forever’ inhabit two distinct corners of the world Marvel Studios is constructing. Caballero credits the Marvel executives for providing valuable guidance on how to approach costuming and set design for these unique projects. Read what she had to share about her experiences below.
To begin with, given my background in theater and my affinity for storytelling, I’m particularly drawn to compelling narratives – the stories I want to contribute to sharing with the world, for the audience to enjoy. It was Mayes C. Rubeo who I initially worked with, and she invited me to collaborate on Ragnarok after we had previously worked on a few projects together. Similarly, I had already collaborated with Ruth E. Carter on one or two projects before she asked me to work on Wakanda Forever. Thus, I had the opportunity to work with two renowned costume designers.
As a fan, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been invited to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe – it’s an extraordinary experience! It’s fascinating to be part of something so iconic. During our creative meetings, you can sense the importance of protecting Marvel’s intellectual property. So when we designers step into their world, we need to do so with great care and respect.
Changing Course On Wakanda Forever
When the conversation shifted towards “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, the costume designer found themselves needing to discuss the unexpected alterations that took place during the movie’s production. The sad reality was that the lead actor unfortunately passed away before significant work on the film had begun. Despite this, the dedicated team chose to persevere through their personal sorrow in order to complete the project.
Speaking to us, Caballero shared insights from his time on the movie “Wakanda Forever,” which lasted a year and eight months. We were tasked with expanding upon a world that Ruth Carter had begun in “BP One” and elevating it further. This process started around July, before Chadwick [Boseman] passed away, and we were already working on a different script together. When the unfortunate event happened, everyone was taken aback. Ryan [Coogler] met with Kevin [Feige] to discuss the next course of action, and there were many discussions about how to proceed.
She went on to say, “Upon reuniting, we collectively acknowledged, ‘Alright, changes are afoot.’ Ryan’s insights from the speeches Chadwick had delivered over the past few years suggested a sequel titled Black Panther 2. With everyone ready to progress, the script was evolving, but there was a vast world to construct. We kept pushing forward with research and development for that project. During our work on Wakanda Forever, watching Ruth excel via Zoom and meeting Mayes in person, I gained confidence that I could carry out what I’ve been prepared to do.”
