As a lifelong fan of Hammer Films and their classic B-movies, I am thrilled to see the studio making a bold return to the silver screen with “Doctor Jekyll.” The new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella promises to deliver the gothic horror, dark humor, and twisted fairytale elements that Hammer is known for. With Eddie Izzard taking on the iconic role of Dr. Jekyll, this production is sure to be a unique and intriguing take on a classic tale.
A fresh trailer has been released for the upcoming movie “Doctor Jekyll,” an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic 19th Century novella. In just under a month, Hammer Film Productions will make their return to cinemas with this intriguing production. The story follows a new caregiver named Scott Chambers, who is tasked with looking after the enigmatic Dr. Nina Jekyll in her secluded home. As he grapples with maintaining professionalism and isolation from the outside world, he soon suspects that all is not well within these walls. Directed by Joe Stephenson, “Doctor Jekyll” boasts an impressive cast including Scott Chambers, Lindsay Duncan, Simon Callow, Jonathan Hyde, Morgan Watkins, Robyn Cara, and Isabella Inchbald, with Tony Jayawardena also starring. Hammer Films, once a cherished B-movie production company, has been barely active for years, merely existing as a brand until 2008 when an investor acquired it. Since then, they have produced films like “Let Me In” and “The Lodge.” Recently, in August, Hammer revealed new ownership and an ambitious lineup of upcoming projects. Their latest film, “Doctor Jekyll,” showcases the Hammer name proudly – it’s evident in the trailer and promotional artwork. This could be their attempt to boost recognition and make a more significant comeback into the limelight.
There’s some uncertainty if the role of Doctor Jekyll was written with Izzard in mind, considering her recent revelation about being transgender while keeping “Eddie” as her professional name. However, director Joe Stephenson previously mentioned that a transgender interpretation of Dr. Jekyll was an attractive aspect of this production, although it may not align with viewers’ expectations.
“Approximately 100 films have been made based on Stevenson’s novella, yet no portrayal of Dr. Jekyll as a transgender person exists. It appears that some people assume our film will focus exclusively on gender issues because Nina is a trans character. However, this is not the case; our movie remains faithful to the source material in terms of its themes.”
Hammer Films invites you to watch the fresh take on “Doctor Jekyll,” a new production based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella. In this adaptation, Eddie Izzard stars as the titular character, under the skilled direction of Joe Stephenson (“Midas Man”). With a captivating blend of gothic horror and dark humor, “Doctor Jekyll” explores themes of duality. Prepare for an intriguing mix of suspense, unexpected camp, and a twisted fairytale. Joining Izzard in this chilling journey are Scott Chambers, Simon Callow, Lindsay Duncan, Jonathan Hyde, Morgan Watkins, and Robyn Cara.
Doctor Jekyll will open in theaters and on demand beginning August 2, 2024.
