Eddie Murphy’s Comments About SNL 50 Being ‘A Trip’ Show That Even The Legends Are Still In Awe Over Being Part Of The Show’s History

I’ve been fortunate enough to be a small part of history, and that includes the countless comedians who’s laughter echoed through the halls of Studio 8H, significantly contributing to the legendary success of Saturday Night Live. You probably already know this, but Eddie Murphy is one of those stars who left an indelible mark on SNL (and in just under five seasons!), delivering some of the show’s most memorable jokes during his four-season tenure. Reflecting on his role in television history, he recently shared that the grand SNL50 celebration was a surreal experience, even for him.

What Did Eddie Murphy Say About Being A Part Of The SNL50 Celebration?

This year started off with several NBC specials, some of which were broadcast on the 2025 TV schedule following the completion of Saturday Night Live’s milestone 50th season. These specials featured returning cast members, popular hosts from past seasons, and well-known musical acts for a grand reunion concert. The iconic comedian Eddie Murphy, known for his side-splitting roles in the “Beverly Hills Cop” series, can undeniably attribute a significant portion of his success over the past four decades to his time at “Saturday Night Live.” Given this connection, it’s only natural that he was included in the festivities for SNL’s 50th anniversary. Recently, during an appearance on “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” he reminisced about reuniting with everyone, jokingly stating that it was a surprise to see how much older everyone had become. Laughing, he added, “It was like a trip, because everybody was really old.

When I first appeared on that show at 19, I later returned to find the same people, now four decades older. The experience was surreal, almost like traveling through time. It was as if I had become a piece of the show itself, part of something much larger and deeply rooted in American culture. With so many talented individuals gathered under one roof, it was an overwhelming feeling of pride and belonging to be associated with such a long-running institution. Truly, being there filled me with joy and admiration.

Before now, I hadn’t given it much thought, but given that Murphy and Hudson, who gave an Oscar-caliber performance in a film together, haven’t met for almost two decades, it suggests he might not have had much contact with many of his fellow SNL cast members since then. Thus, it would be quite surprising to reunite with so many comedians from the past. It would feel like bumping into someone from high school after four decades at a grocery store.

It appears that the actor from Coming to America enjoyed himself immensely and was reminded of the significant mark he’s left on history due to his work on Saturday Night Live.
