Edge of Tomorrow 2: Where's the Tom Cruise Sequel?

As a seasoned gamer and sci-fi enthusiast who has seen more than his fair share of time loops in video games and movies, I can’t help but feel like I’m stuck in one myself when it comes to Edge of Tomorrow. It’s been years since I first saw this gem of a film, and ever since then, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the sequel.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the gripping sci-fi action masterpiece, “Edge of Tomorrow,” featuring the stellar pairing of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, just made its debut on Netflix this week. It swiftly climbed the Top 10 chart, leaving no doubt about its popularity among viewers. The movie, based around Major William Cage’s (Tom Cruise) harrowing experience against an alien invasion that has overtaken Europe, only to find himself trapped in a time loop as he strives to vanquish these foes – a loop that repeats his life, death, and rebirth.

Discussions about a follow-up to the movie “Edge of Tomorrow” began shortly after its release, as early as 2015 when screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, along with Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, hinted that Tom Cruise had an idea for a sequel. Later in April 2016, it was announced that director Doug Liman would take the helm. Over the years, there were sporadic updates, with reports in 2019 stating that not only was the script for “Edge of Tomorrow 2” completed, but that Warner Bros. showed enthusiasm for the project’s progression. However, since then, despite taking into account real-world events like the COVID-19 pandemic that impacted the entertainment industry, little has changed, leaving “Edge of Tomorrow 2” in a seemingly endless loop where life is mirroring art.

With all the chatter about a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, people were excited when Tom Cruise signed a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year. This led many to wonder if we might be seeing Edge of Tomorrow 2 soon. And it looks like there’s a real possibility, as those involved in the original film seem keen on a sequel too. In fact, director Doug Liman recently confirmed that Warner Bros. has been actively discussing a follow-up with him.

As a gamer, I can say that nothing feels better than hearing fans clamoring for more content in the form of a sequel, and that’s exactly how I feel about these two movies – Road House and Edge of Tomorrow. It’s music to my ears when people ask, “When will there be a sequel?” and Warner Bros. echoing the same question about Edge of Tomorrow, asking, “Will you go and make another one of these?

In July, Liman mentioned that he and Cruise discussed the possibility of a second “Edge of Tomorrow” film, expressing their fondness for the universe it portrays. Blunt too has expressed interest in a sequel, provided Cruise is involved, and she even joked that Cruise might not need as many “Mission: Impossible” films if they stood in the way.

Previously this year, when asked about a script for a sequel, Blunt replied affirmatively, stating, “Indeed, we have one. Doug brought it to me. However, I’m unsure about the timing or the method. I merely don’t know when or how this might occur. As for how many Mission: Impossibles he requires, I can’t say. But wasn’t he extraordinary as the timid hero? Truly amazing.

Despite expressing enthusiasm for a potential follow-up, Blunt has also acknowledged that the lapse of time might have made a sequel difficult. In 2023, Blunt hinted that a “fantastic script” under development would have been more effective if it had been produced around the same time as the initial film.

Doug and I frequently discuss this topic according to Blunt. Tom has expressed interest in pursuing it at some stage, though timing is crucial. However, it’s also been approximately a decade since we last worked on it … An exceptional script was being developed, but I believe it would have only been successful if we had filmed it around eight years ago. I’m not implying that we’re old, but you need to consider it’s been ten years since then.

It’s still uncertain what exactly “Edge of Tomorrow 2” may entail, but here’s what we can be sure of: the studio, cast, crew, and even Tom Cruise himself seem keen on it. Add to that Cruise’s recent agreement with Warner Bros., as well as the surge in interest for a sequel following “Edge of Tomorrow”‘s success on Netflix and the increased audience demand, it appears we might be closer than ever to seeing that long-awaited sequel. And who knows, time loop enthusiasts might finally get some closure after over a decade!

Edge of Tomorrow is now streaming on Netflix.
