Elden Ring DLC Not Eligible for BAFTA’s Best Game Award

As someone who has spent countless hours traversing the intricate worlds created by FromSoftware, I must admit that the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion has truly left me spellbound. However, as a seasoned gamer with a keen understanding of the industry, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment when it comes to award eligibility.

It seems that the anticipation for the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion has become quite intense to the point where it might win Game of the Year at The Game Awards, but as fans of FromSoftware, we should remember that DLC doesn’t equate to a complete game. For awards like the BAFTA’s Best Game Award, only full games are considered eligible, so Shadow of the Erdtree won’t qualify.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has clarified to Eurogamer that DLCs and updates are eligible for their Evolving Game category, but not for Best Game. Last year, Baldur’s Gate 3 rightfully won five awards, including Best Game, and is now nominated for the Evolving Game category. Given Larian Studios’ incredibly generous free post-launch support, this recognition seems more than deserved. The decision is clear, concise, and logical.

Unfortunately, the BAFTAs won’t be announced until April, which means they’ll miss out on the year-end excitement that Geoff traditionally dominates. It’s also no secret that Keighley possesses the necessary talent.

Does it really matter if Shadow of the Erdtree takes home Game of the Year at The Game Awards? Is anything of meaningful value lost or gained? Try to cope and not to seethe in the comments section below.
