Summary
- Alex Garland, director of the recently confirmed Elden Ring live-action movie, is actually a massive fan of the game.
- In a recent Reddit AMA, Garland claimed to have reached NG+6 in Shadow of the Erdtree, a feat that not many Elden Ring fans can claim to have accomplished.
This past week, Bandai Namco officially announced that A24 and director Alex Garland have begun work on a live-action film adaptation of Elden Ring. Given the recent buzz and rumors, there was certainly some apprehension, particularly about the suitability of the director and the feasibility of transforming Elden Ring’s storyline into a live-action movie.
It’s well-known that Alex Garland has a strong portfolio in film, contributing to projects such as Civil War and the upcoming 28 Years Later. However, his contributions to video games are less consistent. His past work includes only two titles: DmC Devil May Cry and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Although these games do have their devoted followers, they don’t quite reach the quality level of FromSoftware productions.
Elden Ring Live-Action Movie Director Alex Garland Is Actually A Massive Fan Of The Game
It appears that Garland doesn’t need to immerse himself heavily into VaatiVidya videos, since it was disclosed in a Reddit AMA from a few months back (thanks to GamesRadar), he’s quite fond of the game. In fact, he’s admitted to playing an extraordinary amount of Shadow of the Erdtree and finding it hard to quit.
It’s safe to say that Garland has accomplished a feat that many Elden Ring players haven’t, as he boasted about reaching NG+6 in Shadow of the Erdtree. He also mentioned he’s spent an enormous amount of time playing it, which shows a significant level of dedication. This suggests that Garland is likely to put considerable effort into playing Elden Ring as well.
It’s truly satisfying when a filmmaker clearly loves the game they’re adapting, and although this doesn’t always lead to excellent results, it certainly can’t hurt. For instance, Fallout director Jonathan Nolan confessed that he spent nearly an entire year engrossed in Fallout 3, and look at how successful that series became. Given Elden Ring’s director’s apparent passion for the game, here’s hoping it becomes another triumphant adaptation tale.
