Elden Ring made so much money last year that FromSoft’s owner expects a massive drop in profit, despite Nightreign and Tarnished Edition releases

2023 promises to be a significant year for Elden Ring, as it’s gearing up for some major developments. Following the launch of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion last year, FromSoftware is preparing to release an enhanced version titled the Tarnished Edition, and also a cooperative offshoot called Elden Ring: Nightreign.

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of anticipation when it comes to the upcoming two releases in my beloved series. However, the prospect of these new installments potentially earning significantly less than last year’s record-breaking sales is somewhat disheartening, according to Kadokawa, the owner of FromSoftware.

Elden Ring’s success is its own enemy

According to a recent earnings report, published by Eurogamer, FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa, anticipates a 60% drop in gaming profits for FY2025. This decrease is attributed to the extraordinary success of Elden Ring and its Erdtree expansion during the year 2024, which has led to a significant reduction in profit this fiscal year.

Despite the launch of two new titles in the Elden Ring series this year – the Tarnished Edition re-release on Xbox, PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2, as well as the multiplayer-centric Nightreign spin-off – it’s important to note…

Kadokawa aims to boost the value of FromSoftware’s open-world game as a prominent franchise, while surpassing their predicted profits through the launch of new successful games and increased sales of previous titles.

It’s obvious that Elden Ring has been nearly unprecedented in sales success for the company, with multiple millions of copies sold. Although Nightreign is highly anticipated, the level of excitement doesn’t quite reach the near-maniacal enthusiasm that surrounded the original game and its extensive expansion.

Furthermore, alongside their current projects, FromSoftware is developing additional games, one of which is an exclusive for the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 titled The Duskbloods, slated for release in 2026. Post completing their ongoing multiplayer ventures, the studio intends to focus on creating more single-player games.

From a gamer’s perspective, it’s clear that Kadokawa has high hopes for Elden Ring as an ongoing series. Although a direct sequel might have been ruled out not too long ago, the thought of a numbered installment could potentially fuel the profits even more in the future.
