Hooray for the sun! It turns out we’re finally going to see a movie adapted from a FromSoftware franchise – none other than the highly acclaimed Elden Ring! If you haven’t heard yet, Bandai Namco officially announced it on their site, sparking excitement among fans everywhere.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t hide my excitement about an upcoming project that has caught my attention. The mastermind behind some of my favorite films, Alex Garland (the genius behind Dredd, my all-time favorite comic book adaptation, and the overlooked Best Picture nominee Ex Machina), is set to write and direct this film.
George R.R. Martin, among other esteemed producers, will be part of the team bringing this vision to life. The movie will be an A24 production, a studio known for their exceptional and thought-provoking films.
According to Variety, Kit Connor might star in it, which adds another layer of intrigue to the project. I eagerly await more updates about this promising collaboration.
Well then, that’s about everything we currently understand. Yet, upon hearing this news, my intuition instantly told me it would become the finest video game adaptation ever crafted. Let me explain why!
Alex Garland Will Write And Direct The Hell Out Of This Movie
From what I gather at first glance, the specifics of the storyline for this film remain unknown to me, but here’s something I can confidently state: Given that Alex Garland will be both writing and directing, that alone is more than enough information to pique my interest.
Among Kubrick, Tarantino, PTA, and others, Garland may be my top favorite filmmaker. I’ve admired every movie he’s made, and his writing skills match his directing prowess, which makes me confident that he can masterfully handle the minimal storytelling in “Elden Ring“. Indeed, Garland is a director who excels at creating atmosphere, or simply put, a mood director.
He may not have directed a fantasy film yet, but give “Annihilation” a watch to understand his potential in managing The Lands Between. Additionally, it’s worth noting that he has experience working on video games as well.
He not only played a significant role in penning the often overlooked “Enslaved: Odyssey to the West,” but also oversaw the storyline for “DmC: Devil May Cry.” This versatile writer is also adept at handling broader creative aspects.
I believe he’s an excellent choice for the position, but there are other factors contributing to my excitement as well.

An A24 Video Game Movie? Take My Money
I can’t find a single A24 movie that doesn’t appeal to me. I’ve been enthusiastic about “The Lighthouse”, am fond of every film by Ari Aster, and really resonate with their cinematic style.
Although their collection may lack a traditional fantasy film (except for perhaps The Green Knight), the studio seems to be venturing into diverse territories with movies like Death of a Unicorn and The Legend of Ochi, implying that they are capable of producing dark fantasy films; however, they haven’t produced one thus far.
However, it’s clear that they’ve mastered the “dark” aspect quite well. This is due to the fact that numerous films produced by A24 share a bleak, almost pitch-black nature, and many outstanding horror productions from recent years are part of their repertoire.
This holds significance as Elden Ring, much like many Soulslike games, carries an eerie and unnerving atmosphere. The folks at A24 excel in creating such unsettling experiences.
Well, that’s yet another compelling argument for why this film promises to be absolutely spectacular, possibly surpassing the formidable challenge presented by Malenia, Blade of Miquella – though it may not quite reach those heights, it’s definitely going to give us a run for our money!

Elden Ring Doesn’t Really Have Much Of A Story, But It’s Rich With Lore
George R. R. Martin, often troubled by folks inquiring about “The Winds of Winter,” has been responsible for crafting the game’s mythos. Consequently, his involvement in the movie’s production seems plausible.
I’m quite fond of this situation as it implies that Martin might offer suggestions when Garland inquires about the storyline, for the simple reason that Elden Ring, to be honest, lacks a well-defined narrative.
However, this particular thing boasts a wealth of LORE. If you’re up for it, you can uncover intricate and extensive tales that span across the main game and the expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree.
In my opinion, the film benefits significantly by prioritizing the atmosphere over the plot, similar to Elden Ring’s approach. Therefore, Garland has ample room for creativity, but the key is to ensure that whatever he creates captures the essence and feeling of the game.
Indeed, isn’t that what we’re aiming for? To create an experience that embodies the essence of Elden Ring, which leads us to my final thought.

Lastly, There Really Isn’t That Much Competition When It Comes To Other Video Game Movies
When I placed the 2020 Sonic film as my number one pick among video game adaptations into movies, it implies a certain opinion or assessment on my part.
To be clear, I appreciate the Sonic film, but when considering it among other video game adaptations, many of them tend to fall short, as they are generally subpar.
In a positive light, Elden Ring boasts several advantages: A skilled author or director, collaboration with Bandai Namco, financial backing from A24, and a flexible narrative framework.
If it’s not a recipe for triumph, then I’m at a loss as to what is. In other words, this is undoubtedly the finest video game adaptation into a film – let’s make it happen! Trust me on this!
