During The Game Awards 2024, the initial trailer for “Elden Ring Nightreign” was unveiled, and among the many astonishing aspects of the announcement, the appearance of the Nameless King stood out. While the FromSoftware community has previously modded various elements into Souls games like Elden Ring, witnessing the Nameless King in an official capacity within “Elden Ring Nightreign” seemed almost unrealistic. Remarkably, this is how “Elden Ring Nightreign” seems: a rare exception that defies expectations and performs far better than it ought to.
As a devoted fan, I’ve found myself utterly captivated by Elden Ring: Nightreign after immersing myself in its world for just a few hours. What truly astounds me is how seamlessly FromSoftware has incorporated concepts that seem as if they were designed for a modded version of Elden Ring itself. For instance, the absence of fall damage and the streamlined leveling system where your earned stats are tied directly to your class, eliminating any need for guesswork or strategic planning on my part. Moreover, the Guardian class offers a unique, non-human, bird-like character, much like what you’d expect in Elden Ring lore but with minimal context within the game’s grand narrative.
The novel features of Nightreign’s world, Limveld, represent only a minimal portion, and to be honest, they are comparable in breadth to what was exhibited from the game itself. In total, Nightreign will introduce eight character classes called “Nightfarers” at launch on May 30th, however, during the hands-on preview, we were shown only four – Wylder, Guardian, Recluse, and Duchess. Among these, I primarily interacted with the Wylder and Guardian, as both are focused on melee combat; the former is a versatile combatant while the latter excels in defense and support roles. After several hours of playing Nightreign and unsuccessful attempts to navigate its three-night cycle, I felt that I had barely touched upon those two classes, never mind the remaining two, not even considering the other four that will be available at launch.
The unique abilities of these new Nightfarers, one per class, really catch the eye. For instance, the Guardian’s special skill inflicts significant stagger damage across a wide area, making it ideal for interrupting combos or pushing a boss into critical health territory. Additionally, the Guardian’s ultimate ability is a powerful landing move that deals heavy damage and offers some form of support to teammates. In the game Nightreign, when your health drops, you enter a downed state similar to battle royale games, requiring teammates to deal damage to revive you. Considering this, it’s easy to imagine how an area-of-effect attack from a supportive class like the Guardian can synergize with Nightreign’s game mechanics. With just one ultimate ability, your downed teammates are back in the fight.
One highlight from my time with the game Nightreign was the way they managed loot. As you progress through small camps during your quest to gather weapons, a ring of fire propels you towards the final boss fight at the end of each night. Along the way, you’ll come across chests and other containers brimming with items to collect. If you stumble upon ‘ground loot’, it can be claimed by anyone, making it essential for you and your teammates to decide who gets what. Conquering a boss or solving a puzzle yields personalized loot, allowing each player to select one of three distinct options, ensuring fairness and no disputes over valuable items in Nightreign.
As a gamer immersed in the world of Nightreign, I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the intricate system of infusions and upgrades. Initially, as an Incantation user, I had concerns about how this mechanic would play out since our starting classes didn’t come with Finger Seals or similar items. However, FromSoftware masterfully addressed this challenge.
Seals and catalysts for Spells and Incantations in Nightreign, much like weapons, come with two abilities. I stumbled upon a Seal that granted Rejection and a fireball attack, while a flail I discovered later was Cold-infused with its own Weapon Skill, already equipped with passive abilities that boosted my stats simply by equipping them.
Predetermined affinities and abilities like these in Nightreign eliminate the need for guesswork and strategic planning, streamlining our gaming experiences and getting us into the next battle faster. It’s also convenient that we have six weapon slots, and there’s no carry weight limitation in Nightreign, allowing us to transform our Nightfarer into a mobile arsenal.
In a game like Elden Ring, which is known for its grounded feel, the revival system and certain abilities might seem somewhat unusual. However, this could be more about our familiarity with FromSoftware’s past games rather than how they function in Nightreign itself, as they operate quite intuitively. The idea of a “Press X to Revive” button in Nightreign would appear almost comical, so helping your teammate back up by attacking them is the next best option. The new features, including automated leveling and simplified loot system, are surprising coming from FromSoftware, a developer not primarily known for multiplayer, yet they’ve integrated these ideas remarkably well. The one notable multiplayer issue in the preview seems to be the lack of voice chat in Nightreign. While this won’t be an issue for those playing with friends or using Discord, communicating and strategizing for the “final ring” and dividing loot is much smoother over voice communication. Playing solo might not offer as seamless an experience due to this lack of communication.
Despite some reservations due to the unfamiliarity with multiplayer and new concepts, Elden Ring Nightreign appears to be an impressive spin-off, especially for a series not typically associated with multiplayer. As a longtime Souls fan, there was initial apprehension about something that seemed so different from FromSoftware’s usual expertise. However, even a few hours of play have eased those concerns, leaving me eager to experience the complete and polished version of Nightreign.
