Elden Ring: Nightreign, the new cooperative roguelike spin-off by FromSoftware, is primarily structured as a three-player multiplayer game. However, it allows for solo play if preferred, with reduced enemy and boss difficulty (additional accommodations for solo players will be added post Patch 1.02 next week). Regrettably, the game does not include a duos mode where you can explore Limveld with another Nightfarer companion at this time.
This option could significantly enhance the gaming experience for individuals who typically play with just a single friend or are online with only one friend at a time. Excitingly, it might be incorporated into the game in the future; during an interview, Director Junya Ishizaki mentioned that FromSoftware had previously underestimated and overlooked multiplayer options involving duos, stating that they are now looking into this aspect and considering it for post-launch support.
While I’m optimistic that Nightreign will offer official duos support at some point, if you’re using the PC version, a mod called “Seamless Co-op (Nightreign)” is already available. This project was developed by Yui, who is well-known for creating the Seamless Co-op mod for Elden Ring and the Blue Sentinel anti-cheat mod for Dark Souls 3. More recently, they’ve released seamless co-op for other Dark Souls games as well.
As a researcher delving into Yui’s collection of smooth cooperative mods, I found this particular one to be particularly intriguing. Unlike traditional multiplayer modes that rely on FromSoftware’s matchmaking servers, this modification cuts off that connection and instead establishes a peer-to-peer link with my friends. To minimize the chance of triggering anti-cheat systems set up by the developers, the mod creates an alternate save file specifically for its use, seamlessly switching to it upon launch.
On Nexus Mods, the mod’s guide (provided link) provides a straightforward installation and usage guide. In essence:
1. Move the project’s files into your Elden Ring Nightreign game folder.
2. Adjust the nrsc_settings.ini file to specify the number of players in your party.
3. Run the game using the provided nrsc_launcher.exe executable.
This is the unique method to start the mod; initiating it through Steam or the standard .exe will launch Nightreign with its usual link to FromSoftware’s servers and your original save file.
Once you’ve entered the Roundtable Hold within the modified game version, simply invite your friend (or multiple friends if you’re playing with a group of three) using Steam from the matchmaking menu, just as you usually would. After that, you can immediately start a run together.

You wouldn’t typically need Nightreign’s smooth three-player co-op unless you and your companions fancy tinkering with modifications. However, the main appeal lies in its duos feature; the absence of this feature in the original version resulted in the mod being released in a hurried “alpha state.
From my perspective, it seems you might encounter some bugs, as evidenced by numerous users on the mod forum discussing problems such as connection difficulties or a peculiar glitch where all in-game text shows up as “[string not found]”. Despite these issues, the mod is functional, and I’m confident that Yui will address and smooth out these kinks with updates and future releases.
Significantly, Yui mentions that the mod will be expanded further down the line, which leads me to infer that Nightreign’s smooth cooperative play might eventually incorporate features for customizing gameplay elements or allowing parties of four players or more. However, at present, it’s best to appreciate their dedication and have a great time playing Nightreign in a two-player team if you’ve got a friend you’d like to team up with.
In a fresh and daring departure from FromSoftware, Elden Ring: Nightreign offers an exhilarating twist on the Soulsborne combat of the original game, blending it with roguelike mechanics and cooperative play. Despite some notable challenges such as limited map diversity and a somewhat repetitive enemy roster,
