The director of Elden Ring Nightreign, Junya Ishizaki, has shared insights on why some bosses from the Dark Souls series will be featured in the upcoming spin-off. Upon the initial reveal of Nightreign at The Game Awards about two months ago, eagle-eyed Dark Souls fans swiftly spotted the Nameless King from Dark Souls 3 in the trailer, sparking speculation about connections between Elden Ring and Dark Souls, which were previously believed to be distinct universes. Ishizaki has now clarified why bosses like the Nameless King and others from the Dark Souls universe will appear in Elden Ring Nightreign, and it appears that this decision is largely unrelated to any lore-based explanations.
In an interview with GameSpot, Ishizaki explained that the primary motivation for including familiar FromSoftware bosses in Elden Ring: Nightreign is to enhance gameplay. Since the structure of Nightreign differs from other FromSoft action games, a larger number of bosses were required. To save time and resources, they opted to reintroduce bosses from older games when appropriate, creating a blend of entirely new bosses and ones that veterans may recognize from past battles.
Ishizaki clarified that the presence of these bosses in Nightreign is primarily for gameplay purposes. Given the new structure and style of the game, a variety of bosses were essential to make the experience richer. To enrich this mix, they decided to utilize concepts from their past titles that seemed fitting.
He explained that since our gamers hold these characters in high regard and have cherished memories of facing them in previous games, we didn’t want to disrupt that narrative connection too much. Instead, we aimed for these bosses to fit seamlessly within the theme and ambiance of Elden Ring Nightreign. From a gameplay perspective, our goal was to incorporate these bosses, modify them to suit the mechanics of Nightreign, and ensure they felt comfortable in their new environment. Primarily, this was about maintaining balance. On a more personal note, I found it exciting to bring back some of these classic opponents.
Although players may have hoped for a more extensive connection between Elden Ring and Dark Souls lore, FromSoftware’s design philosophy for Nightreign seems to follow a different path. As of now, it remains unclear how many bosses from Dark Souls (or other FromSoft properties) will be incorporated into Elden Ring Nightreign. However, the thrill of encountering each returning boss during gameplay is something fans can look forward to when the game is released.
Currently, the much-anticipated game “Elden Ring Nightreign” now has a confirmed release date: May 30, 2025. Upon its launch, players can expect to find it on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC platforms.
