In the upcoming game Elden Ring: Nightreign, adventurers will soon find themselves traversing the ever-changing landscapes of Limveld. Solo explorers or groups of three can delve into this world for an exciting journey filled with exploration and survival challenges. However, it appears that duos may have to accommodate a third member in their group.
In iggn.ru‘s interview with Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki, the Nightreign lead discussed the choice to lean on solos and trios as the core experience options. When asked why there’s no option for a pair of players to drop in together without a matchmade third player, Ishizaki said it was overlooked.
Ishizaki explained that during development, a feature intended for the game, initially designed as a two-player option, was inadvertently overlooked. He apologized for any inconvenience this may have caused. To clarify, the team’s original intention was to create a multiplayer cooperative game for three players, with the game’s balance and core design revolving around that setup. This is the essence of Nightreign.
Ishizaki stated, “I, too, appreciate single-player sessions, and we’ve always aimed to provide a good solo gaming experience. While focusing on this, we might have overlooked the duo aspect initially. But don’t worry, we are planning to address this in our post-launch updates.
If you’re only teaming up with your preferred partner, keep an open mind for a potential new team member. It could turn out that this extra player is quite skilled in the game.
If you’re playing Elden Ring: Nightreign alone, it seems designed to cater to your situation. As Ishizaki explained, the game settings adapt based on the number of players in a given session. Therefore, solo players can expect a more manageable experience in single-player mode.
To play Elden Ring Nightreign, you’ll need to discover self-resurrection features for those who choose single-player mode. If you’re playing with a trio, it seems that’s the main focus of the game. As for duos, it’s unclear if they’re supported or not, but having an additional player could be beneficial when facing some of the challenging bosses in Nightreign.
On May 30, 2025, the highly anticipated game Elden Ring Nightreign will be released for personal computers, PlayStation 4 and 5, as well as Xbox One and Series X and S gaming consoles.
