Elden Ring Nightreign Doesn’t Feature the Message System, Director Confirms

As a long-time fan of FromSoftware and its Soulslike series, I must admit that the news about Elden Ring Nightreign removing the message system has left me feeling a bit nostalgic. For years, I have enjoyed the camaraderie and shared experiences with fellow travelers in the game’s world, exchanging words of encouragement or warnings of danger through those cryptic messages on the ground.

However, I understand that change is an inevitable part of progress, and as a co-op focused title, Nightreign is bound to have a different pace and structure. The removal of the message system might be necessary to accommodate the shorter play sessions, but it still leaves me with a bittersweet feeling. It’s like losing a trusted travel companion who has been by my side through countless battles and challenges.

On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder if FromSoftware will introduce some new way for players to communicate in Nightreign – perhaps ghostly emojis or cryptic hieroglyphics! Who knows, maybe we’ll even find a way to leave messages without actually writing them down. After all, the journey never ends in the world of Elden Ring.

In a slightly altered phrasing: Elden Ring Nightreign deviates from traditional FromSoftware gameplay in various aspects, including its emphasis on cooperative play, roguelike mechanics, and multi-dimensional world setting. Additionally, one subtle feature that has been absent in previous Soulslike games by the studio is the message system.

In Elden Ring Nightreign, unlike FromSoftware’s previous Soulslikes, players won’t be able to leave or read scrolling messages on the ground due to game director Junya Ishizaki stating that each playthrough typically lasts no more than 40 minutes, leaving insufficient time for both reading and writing messages.

In this game, Ishizaki mentioned, the feature to communicate through messages has been taken out because each gaming session lasts approximately 40 minutes. This short duration doesn’t allow players enough time to compose their own messages or read messages from other players, he elaborated. Additionally, you can still observe the spirits of previous players in the game.

Given that Nightreign, as a spin-off with a cooperative focus, is likely to have a unique structure and pace compared to its origin, it’s not unexpected that some elements will be adjusted or altered here and there. However, whether these changes will result in an engaging experience remains to be seen, sparking curiosity among players.

The highly-anticipated game Elden Ring Nightreign is scheduled for release in the year 2025 across various platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A closed trial for players will be held in February, with registration opening up next week.
