In an interview with IGN, director Junya Ishizaki from FromSoftware admitted that their upcoming cooperative action RPG, Elden Ring: Nightreign, was unintentionally biased towards three-player parties. This is because the game’s design and balance were centered around this concept. However, it seems they may have overlooked those who might have preferred a more intimate 2-player experience.
Ishizaki explained that during development, the two-player option was unintentionally missed, as the primary emphasis was on creating a multiplayer cooperative game for three players. Thus, he apologizes for any inconvenience caused. Initially, their goal was to design Nightreign as a balanced three-player co-op game, making that the central aspect of the game.
Absolutely, as a participant myself, I can relate and appreciate the desire for individual gameplay sessions. That’s why we took great care from the outset to develop an enjoyable single-player experience, given the constraints of the rules and new systems. And that’s exactly what we’ve strived to do.
Ishizaki mentioned that FromSoftware is exploring the possibility of incorporating a feature in Elden Ring: Nightreign where two players can team up without relying on matchmaking to find each other. He explained, “In our eagerness to focus on this area, we may have unintentionally disregarded the dual-player aspect. However, this is something that we are thinking about and may include in post-launch updates.
According to Ishizaki, even though Elden Ring: Nightreign is designed primarily for three-player parties, it still caters well to those who prefer playing solo. Essentially, while the game is structured around multiplayer interactions, you’ll find that much of your time in Nightreign will be spent acting and making decisions independently.
Regardless if it’s just the three of you, you’ll explore various parts of the map, gather distinct items, and then reunite prior to engaging in the boss battle.
Back in February, Ishizaki discussed that duos (two-player groups) could only engage in matches with a third player added through matchmaking. To clarify, when discussing a dual queue system, he stated that it’s already implemented. This means you can team up with your friend and another randomly selected player throughout the entire game, eliminating any potential issues.
Initially, Ishizaki stated that developing distinct modes for single player and multiplayer games with exactly two participants wasn’t their primary focus at that point in time. He explained, “Although we are contemplating the possibility of two-player modes, it is not yet integrated into the game as of now.
The game titled “Elden Ring: Nightreign” will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on May 30th. Additionally, FromSoftware is developing another multiplayer game, “The Duskbloods,” which is exclusive to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
