As we get closer to diving into Elden Ring Nightreign, its spinoff dropping later this month, some of us might have already gotten a taste of it. Unlike me, who found myself utterly stumped when the test was held back in February. Given that most of us haven’t had much hands-on experience with it thus far, it was quite timely that FromSoftware and Bandai Namco released a trailer yesterday, shedding light on what awaits us in this Souls-like Fortnite-esque adventure.
Upon entering Limveld for the first time, your character is relatively weak, being only level one. You’ll find yourself battling ordinary opponents, collecting treasure from chests, activities common in the original Elden Ring. What sets this apart is that you can also stealthily infiltrate various bases to acquire maps offering valuable information about the region. Additionally, there are formidable adversaries who can easily floor you if you’re not cautious; these challenges present a chance for the daring to earn greater rewards.
ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN | Overview Trailer
A notable difference is the unpredictable occurrences in each session. It’s worth noting that the map layout can significantly shift from one session to another, sometimes drastically, other times subtly. For instance, you might stumble upon an active volcanic zone or need to navigate through decaying forests. And let’s not forget the possibility of encountering that infamous character who labels you as corrupt! In essence, there seems to be a great deal of diversity in each experience.
In Fortnite, the shrinking storm circle isn’t merely a gradual death sentence when you’re outside its boundaries. As darkness falls, you’ll find yourself confined within a minuscule area, which means you’ll have to contend with stronger opponents.
In this game, you’ll notice that the Roundtable Hold appears somewhat altered. It seems to be where you can arm relics, each with unique abilities. From what I can tell, these relics appear to enhance your stats and improve skills, though it wasn’t entirely clear what all they could do.
The game features an in-game currency named Murk, used for purchasing various costumes for predefined characters. This ensures some level of personalization for players. Included among these options is a Solaire of Astora costume, as well as others referencing other characters. Personally, I’m partial to the hunter outfit from Bloodborne, a preference that won’t come as a shock to those who know me best.
In addition to everything else, although you can’t create your own character, you’ll encounter something referred to as fragments that reveal parts of the Nightfarers’ past. Plus, if you progress for three days in a single session, you’ll face authentic boss battles. It wouldn’t feel like a Soulslike game without these challenging encounters!
I’m not fully on board with Nightreign yet; it definitely shows clever reuse of assets, but I personally prefer my FromSoft games to have a more artisanal feel. However, I’ll save my opinions until May 30th, when the game officially releases.
