Elden Ring: Nightreign isn’t a Live Service Game, Not Full-Priced

As a seasoned gamer with years of traversing Soulsborne games under my belt, I must say that the announcement of Elden Ring: Nightreign left me absolutely ecstatic! FromSoftware has always been a master at crafting intricate, immersive worlds, and the prospect of exploring one together with fellow Tarnished is just too tantalizing to resist.

At this year’s The Game Awards, the announcements were numerous and unexpected, yet none were as shocking as the revelation of “Elden Ring: Nightreign,” a separate cooperative game set within the universe of Elden Ring. It may seem unusual because FromSoftware isn’t typically associated with multiplayer games, despite several of their titles boasting critically acclaimed multiplayer mechanics. However, while Nightreign is undeniably designed for multiplayer interaction, FromSoftware assures us it won’t be a live service game.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Elden Ring’s co-op title’s director, Junya Ishizaki, revealed that the studio isn’t creating Elden Ring: Nightreign as a live service game. Instead, their aim is to provide players with a “full game experience” from the get-go.

When designing Nightreign, our goal was to create a game that feels fully-featured right from the moment it’s purchased. This means all content and features are accessible, everything is included in the initial purchase. We don’t categorize this as a ‘live service’ game.

Currently, FromSoftware is prioritizing the release of “Nightreign”. As of now, there are no definitive plans set for what happens after the game’s launch. However, rest assured that adjustments such as balance updates and patches will be applied whenever needed, regardless of the post-launch strategies FromSoftware ultimately chooses.

Ishizaki emphasized that their primary focus is on the launch of Nightreign, but they plan to evaluate and address any necessary adjustments post-release. This includes balance updates and similar modifications, which they’ve implemented with past games. For other matters, they are still contemplating potential options.

Furthermore, FromSoftware has also clarified that the cooperative game won’t be a high-priced release. Instead, it’s anticipated to cost around the same as Elden Ring’s expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, which is priced at $39.99 for reference.

Elden Ring: Nightreign is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
