Feedback for Elden Ring Nightreign has begun, and surprisingly, it’s garnering a lower score than usual for developer FromSoftware. While their Soulsborne series is renowned for its critically acclaimed games, the three-player cooperative action roguelite of Nightreign appears not to meet the same level of praise.
Currently, as I pen this down, the game “Elden Ring Nightreign” has been given an average score of 77 on Metacritic, primarily based on reviews from PlayStation 5, where a total of 60 critics have shared their opinions. Interestingly, PC version has a slightly higher rating with 80, derived from 31 reviews. The Xbox Series X/S version appears to be an anomaly with an aggregate score of 88, but this is based on only four reviews.
As a fervent admirer, I must acknowledge that the acclaimed Elden Ring Nightreign has been marked with the lowest Metacritic score among all FromSoftware Soulsborne titles, dipping below Dark Souls Remastered’s 84. Interestingly, when we exclude re-releases, remasters, and remakes from the equation, it is a three-way tie between the original Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 3, all boasting an impressive score of 89.
Elden Ring Nightreign’s Score Is Weak For FromSoft
The Developer’s Reputation Has Become Illustrious
77 might not be an alarmingly low score, but it’s surprising given FromSoftware’s reputation for consistently delivering exceptional games, particularly those within the expanding Soulsborne genre. To provide context, the following table lists every game in the Soulsborne series (including re-releases, remasters, and remakes), in order of release, along with their Metascores on their most widely reviewed platform:
| Game | Release Year | Metascore (Most Reviewed Platform) |
||||
| Demon’s Souls Remake 2020 | 2020 | 94 |
| Dark Souls Remastered | 2018 | 86 |
| Bloodborne | 2015 | 93 |
| Dark Souls III | 2016 | 87 |
| Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin | 2014 | 84 |
| Dark Souls II | 2014 | 81 |
| Dark Souls | 2011 | 90 |
| Demon’s Souls | 2009 | 86 |
Title | Metascore |
---|---|
Demon’s Souls | 89 |
Dark Souls | 89 |
Dark Souls 2 | 91 |
Bloodborne | 92 |
Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin | 87 |
Dark Souls 3 | 89 |
Dark Souls Remastered | 84 |
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | 90 |
Demon’s Souls (2020) | 92 |
Elden Ring | 96 |
Elden Ring Nightreign | 77 |
It’s quite astonishing how modestly Nightreign scored, given that Elden Ring received an impressively high 96, and its impressive Shadow of the Erdtree expansion earned a 94 on Metacritic. Games like Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro are often regarded as some of the greatest games ever made. In this context, Nightreign appears to be an exception, and it marks a surprising low point for FromSoftware in terms of these metrics.
A 77 For Nightreign Is Nothing To Worry About
Nightreign Was Always Going To Be Divisive
Despite Nightreign’s score of 77 initially seeming unusual, it’s ultimately not entirely shocking. The Elden Ring Nightreign differs significantly from its namesake, and its heavy emphasis on multiplayer was likely to disappoint fans who appreciate the immersive RPG experiences FromSoftware is renowned for. I had the opportunity to play a pre-release version of the game in January, and in my Elden Ring Nightreign review, I noted:
In essence, it seems that most Elden Ring enthusiasts might be looking for more traditional single-player RPGs. However, Nightreign, being a roguelite game, is quite different – almost the opposite of what has contributed to the growing popularity of FromSoftware’s games. It’s not exactly a live service game either, and it may not resonate with Elden Ring’s core audience, including the dedicated PvP community.
In a somewhat unusual position among the acclaimed series of Soulsborne games, Elden Ring Nightreign might not immediately blend in with its peers. However, our comprehensive Nightreign review praises several aspects of FromSoftware’s latest creation, and many gamers are likely to discover appealing elements when it launches on May 30. Despite Elden Ring Nightreign‘s Metacritic rating being a potential low for the Soulsborne franchise, it is still expected to garner a devoted fanbase.
