As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the news about Elden Ring: Nightreign has left me feeling a tad perplexed. With its emphasis on multiplayer and roguelike elements, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to bridge the gap between PlayStation and Xbox gamers. Alas, it appears that FromSoftware’s decision to forgo cross-play will leave us still yearning for that elusive dream of unity across platforms.
FromSoftware has emphasized that Elden Ring: Nightreign isn’t intended as a live-service game, but it’s essentially built for a multiplayer focus. However, this game won’t include the typical feature you’d expect from such a title.
In a conversation with IGN, the director of Elden Ring: Nightreign, Junya Ishizaki, shared that this game won’t support cross-platform play, much like Elden Ring itself. This means that PS4 and PS5 users can team up, as well as Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S players, but unfortunately, PlayStation and Xbox gamers cannot join forces to venture together in the game world.
Just like the initial Elden Ring, there’ll be multiplayer compatibility across different generations of systems, but it won’t support play between various platforms, Ishizaki confirmed.
It’s been confirmed that while the game Elden Ring: Nightreign can be played alone or in groups of three, there will not be an option for two-player teams to join forces.
The game titled “Elden Ring: Nightreign” is scheduled to release in the year 2025, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and personal computers. A closed beta testing period is planned for some time in February.
