Elden Ring: Nightreign’s Development Didn’t Start Off With Battle Royale Influences

In a conversation with GameSpot, Elden Ring: Nightreign’s director, Junya Ishizaki, shared that the team didn’t initially conceive the game with battle royale elements in mind. He explained that the concept of a shrinking play area known as the Ring of Reign, which restricts player movement, was developed later on.

According to Ishizaki, the battle royale-style structure wasn’t the foundation of the game; instead, it evolved or took form throughout the development process of Nightreign.

To give an example, the ‘Circle of Control’ surrounding the playfield is a feature players may recognize, but it wasn’t part of the original design. We added it to guide player movement and decision-making, making the map navigation more engaging. It seemed effective during testing, so we decided to keep it.

In these multiplayer games such as PUBG: Battlegrounds, Fortnite, and Apex Legends (and numerous other battle royale titles), the competition format involves players battling each other in progressively smaller arenas. This design ensures that a game concludes with distinct victors by gradually confining the play area, thereby forcing encounters among the remaining participants.

With Elden Ring: Nightreign, developer FromSoftware intends to employ this mechanic as a means to lead players through the vast game world towards fresh and thrilling battle arenas. Rather than being a novel concept, Elden Ring will also incorporate elements of world dynamism, borrowed from roguelike games.

In an announcement earlier this month, Ishizaki shared that in addition to battling various game foes, players will also encounter dynamic changes within the game environment itself. These alterations can extend across larger scales, such as entire areas transforming into towering volcanoes or swamps, inviting players to view the world as a colossal labyrinth or dungeon.

I aimed to create a colossal dungeon-like map for an immersive, ever-changing exploration experience,” I express as a passionate fan. “Each time you play, you’ll be presented with a new pathway to tread upon. At the culmination of your third day, you’re tasked with picking the boss you wish to confront.

In the upcoming game, players will have an opportunity to face off against numerous adversaries, some of whom appear to be familiar faces, such as The Nameless King from Dark Souls 3, as hinted in the trailer released in December 2024. Ishizaki confirmed post-announcement that this title will incorporate bosses from a variety of FromSoftware games.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but get excited about the possibility that The Duke’s beloved Freja could make an appearance in the upcoming game, given the large spider seen in one of the studio’s recent screenshots. It’s still unclear who will be on the final roster, but the resemblance is striking enough to spark speculation among fans like me.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled about the upcoming release of “Elden Ring: Nightreign”! This epic adventure is set to drop on PC, last-gen consoles like PS4 and Xbox One, as well as next-gen platforms such as PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The news broke earlier this week that we can expect it to hit the shelves on May 30th. FromSoftware has also announced multiple editions for us to choose from!
