Elden Ring Nightreign’s Wylder can not only rocket jump with his explosive ultimate, he can grappling hook combo into it to fly around like an offstage Smash Bros. character

In a recently published video, gaming expert VaatiVidya, known as the Chief LoreTuber of FromSoft, unveiled an intriguing detail about the Nightreign character mechanics in Elden Ring that have been either concealed or not adequately explained. It turns out that the default character, Wylder, possesses some impressive combo and movement techniques reminiscent of fighting games.

The strategies for utilizing Wylder’s abilities were initially shared several months back during Nightreign’s trial run, by user OnslaughtCasualty42 on the FromSoftware subreddit. In a quirky guide aptly titled “A Rough Guide to Propel Wylder,” OnslaughCasualty42 explains some intriguing interplays and combinations between Wylder’s ultimate move with the Guts arm cannon, his jump, and grappling hook.

In simpler terms, Vaati’s top technique involves using the grapple, spinning around 180 degrees, then firing your ultimate to propel yourself even further ahead, similar to a Quake rocket jump. This move resembles the dynamic movement and offstage recovery combos often seen in Super Smash Bros. Melee, such as the Reverse Temple Jump.

In reality, it doesn’t offer much practical use during Nightreign gameplay, but it can be quite handy in certain situations. For instance, it could help you cross a chasm swiftly when there’s no spirit spring nearby, reach the top of a fort from a distant mountain, or provide a quick escape as danger approaches with the closing circle. Yet, its coolness factor is off the charts!

Nightreign generally excels in many aspects, but occasionally makes some confusing, catastrophic mistakes. However, its collection of Souls characters is undeniably top-notch. They appear stylish, enjoyable to play, and it’s becoming clear that each character has a high skill ceiling for fighting games, with a multitude of movement techniques and hidden mechanisms at their disposal.

My top pick is still Johnny Katanas, the Executor, whose deliberate Sekiro deflect position encourages players to understand when it’s appropriate to absorb damage and when they should be dealing damage. I’m looking forward to seeing mechanics similar to these incorporated into character classes in FromSoft’s future standalone, single-player games.
