Yet, when it comes to choosing his most ideal love interest, there are several contenders like Karen Page, Kirsten McDuffie, or even the scandalous affair with Mindy Libris, wife of a crime boss. However, among notable figures such as Black Widow and Typhoid Mary, it is Elektra Natchios who holds the title of Daredevil’s most significant romance for Matthew Murdock.

For individuals familiar solely with the ex-assassin from the initial Netflix series, it might seem surprising considering her frequent portrayal as a villain rather than an ally. However, comics enthusiasts are well aware of the rich history between them. Their first encounter took place in college, where Matt’s debut as Daredevil involved intervening when a group of armed men held several hostages, including Elektra’s father. Unfortunately, during this incident, Elektra’s father lost his life. Overwhelmed by grief, Elektra departed to cope with her pain, and Matt felt responsible for not being able to prevent her departure. Subsequently, she was taken under the wing of the assassination organization known as the Hand, marking the beginning of many confrontations between her and Daredevil throughout the years.

Despite their contrasting perspectives, it seems that Elektra and Daredevil often found themselves drawn back into each other’s embrace whenever their paths crossed. In our ongoing disagreements, I remain optimistic about each other, with Matt persistently holding faith that Elektra might alter her path, and Elektra constantly inviting me to walk the morally complex road with her. The transformation occurred in Elektra herself during Chip Zdarsky’s 2019 and 2022 Daredevil series. She took actions she deemed right, even going as far as collaborating with Daredevil to steal from an evil billionaire family and redistribute the wealth to New York’s impoverished citizens. We found common ground in this partnership, with me participating in questionable acts, while Elektra was my ally in helping people. This union fell apart when I discovered she had kept a substantial portion of the stolen money for herself. Yet, it didn’t completely disintegrate because when Daredevil surrendered himself to be arrested later in that story, Elektra pledged to safeguard Hell’s Kitchen in my absence, as a gesture of goodwill.

In Hell’s Kitchen, Elektra assumed the role previously held by Daredevil, undergoing a transformation in the process. As she delved deeper into Matt Murdock’s motivations for protecting others, her initial intent of manipulating him shifted. Instead, she found herself driven to safeguard the innocent out of a newfound sense of purpose. This is what makes Elektra an ideal partner for Daredevil, as both characters embody complex heroes who grapple with inner turmoil yet harness it to aid those in need.
