Elio Trailer From Disney and Pixar Reveals New Cosmic Comedy

Disney has revealed the initial trailer for Pixar’s summer sci-fi adventure titled Elio. This film is the 28th feature produced by the studio, being their first original production since 2023’s Elemental. As described by the studio, the movie is a comical journey that revolves around an enthusiastic space fanatic who has an overactive imagination and a strong fascination with aliens. The synopsis continues, “Elio embarks on an extraordinary mission when he’s transported to the Communiverse, an intergalactic organization featuring representatives from various galaxies. However, Elio is mistaken for Earth’s leader, prompting him to forge new relationships with peculiar alien beings, manage a crisis of cosmic magnitude, and ultimately figure out his true purpose among the stars.

In the animated film, Yonas Kibreab lends his voice to the character Elio, while Aunt Olga is portrayed by Zoe Saldaña from Avatar. Remy Edgerly voices Glordon, who you may recognize from Sing 2. Brad Garrett brings Lord Grigon to life, a role he previously played in Everybody Loves Raymond. Ambassador Questa is voiced by Jameela Jamil from The Good Place, and Shirley Henderson plays the character OOOOO.

This upcoming sci-fi film set in outer space is led by directors Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina. Sharafian has previously directed “Burrow” Sparkshort, while Shi is known for her work on “Bao” short and “Turning Red”. Molina co-screened and co-directed the film “Coco”. The production of this movie is overseen by Mary Alice Drumm, who was an associate producer on “Coco”.

In a twist on typical Pixar/sci-fi expectations, reminiscent of “WALL·E” (no disrespect intended for “Lightyear”), Sharafian offers a similar heartwarming narrative but with a fresh theme. She explained that the protagonist is a boy who feels like an outsider on Earth, symbolically represented by the title character. When Elio gets transported into the ‘Communiverse’, these alien ambassadors view him as Earth’s leader. The sense of loneliness in the story is pivotal, as he yearns to be accepted. This longing motivates him to disguise his identity and attempt to belong within this extraordinary alien realm.

The new feature we’re introducing follows the success of the record-breaking animated film, “Inside Out 2,” which held the title of Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated movie for several months until being surpassed by “Ne Zha 2.” Although “Inside Out 2” grossed over $1 billion worldwide, it lost to the Latvian film “Flow” at this year’s Oscars for Best Animated Feature. Consequently, our upcoming release, “Elio,” needs to be truly extraordinary to create a stir at the box office and help Disney break its longest Oscar dry spell.
