Actress Elle Fanning from the movie “Predator: Badlands” has hinted at an intriguing plot twist that might divide long-time fans of the franchise. During Disney’s CinemaCon event (as reported by Comic Book Movie), Fanning revealed some details about the film, due for release in cinemas on November 7th. She offered a glimpse into the storyline, suggesting that traditional dynamics of the series will be flipped for this installment. Instead of battling against a Predator, Fanning’s character, Thia, will team up with the alien creature.
In this film, something extraordinary transpires, and my character isn’t the one being pursued. Instead, my character forms an alliance with the Predator, offering a fresh perspective on him. Furthermore, the movie addresses the intriguing possibility of what it would be like if the Predator were a hero instead.
In a past disclosure, director Dan Trachtenberg of “Predator: Badlands” shared that the Predator would serve as the film’s main character. His vision for this project includes challenging the established norms of the franchise by constructing a tale where viewers might find themselves sympathizing with the Predator. The setting of “Predator: Badlands” unfolds on an extraterrestrial landscape, and the storyline involves two sisters navigating through a desolate wasteland.
Following his work on the 2022 movie “Prey,” Trachtenberg is once again taking the helm for the Predator franchise. While “Predator: Badlands” isn’t the only new Predator film set for release in 2025, it was announced last year that a previously unconfirmed installment is also in development by 20th Century Studios. At this point, specifics about the project are being kept confidential, but Trachtenberg wrote and directed that movie too.
In any franchise as old-standing as Predator, there’s a constant need to innovate, however slightly, to keep the story engaging. Despite Prey garnering the highest Rotten Tomatoes score for the series, there are only so many ways to reimagine the “Predator hunts humans” theme without it becoming repetitive. The new twist of making the Predator the protagonist is a creative take on familiar themes, but partnering him with a human might raise some eyebrows due to the Predator’s terrifying reputation as a relentless hunter and trophy collector. In previous installments, numerous characters have met grisly ends at the hands of the Predator. Director Trachtenberg has assured us that the Predator remains formidable in Badlands, but showing a softer side to him by teaming up with a human could be risky if not executed skillfully.
To put it simply, Trachtenberg’s work on Prey was impressive enough that we should give him the advantage of the doubt until fans can witness this idea in action with Predator: Badlands. At the moment, it’s challenging to foresee how this concept will unfold in the franchise as it is something new and unprecedented. However, once some previews are released and viewers get a glimpse of Trachtenberg’s vision, the change in Badlands might just be one of the most exciting things to happen to the series. In any case, the film is certain to make an impact due to its uniqueness and willingness to take risks with something fresh.
