In the prequel of “The Hunger Games,” entitled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” another beloved character from the original series, Effie Trinket, is being recast for her younger counterpart in the timeline. Effie was the fashion stylist and chaperone for tributes hailing from District 12 during their stay at the Capitol of Panem, portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the main series. However, she did not appear in “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” as it is set before her time. The story now jumps forward 40 years to Effie’s early days on the job. According to a recent report from “The Wrap,” Elle Fanning has been offered the role, but the casting deal has not yet been finalized.
In these prequels, the timeline of The Hunger Games can seem a bit jumbled, but it’s important to remember that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes happens 64 years prior to the first film. The forthcoming movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, is set 24 years before The Hunger Games, which means there will be plenty of chances for well-known characters to make an appearance. Among them is Effie, who served as the cheerful and affable handler for tributes from District 12.
Author Suzanne Collins recently released her book titled “Sunrise at The Reaping” last month. This novel focuses on the 50th edition of the Hunger Games taking place in Panem, where Haymitch Abernathy emerged victorious. In this instance, Haymitch is portrayed as a 16-year-old contestant instead of the Woody Harrelson character from the original films, as he competes in the second “Quarter Quell” within Panem. Unlike regular Hunger Games, none of the other participants can survive in this unique competition. However, there are notable characters worth watching such as Wiress, Mags Flanagan, Beetee Latier, and Coriolanus Snow, all of whom were prominent figures in the main series, along with Snow himself, now serving as the President of Panem.
It’s uncertain if Snow will be played by a different actor, or if they’ll opt to make Tom Blyth appear older for the 40-year gap between these two prequels. What we do know is that Sunrise on the Reaping, scripted by Billy Ray and directed by Francis Lawrence, is in the works. Suzanne Collins has also signed on as a producer for this project.
At just 27 years old, Fanning’s career has been remarkably successful, and there are more exciting ventures ahead for her too. She recently wrapped up filming “Predator: Badlands“, which is set to premiere in cinemas on November 7th of this year. The storyline of the movie remains under wraps, but given that she’s the only cast member who’s been publicly announced, it seems likely that she will be taking center stage.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Reaping” is set to grace our cinema screens on November 20, 2026. If you can’t wait like me, you can get your hands on the novel right now in print, digital, or audio format.
