Ellen Pompeo is not afraid to call a code green.
The leading actress of “Grey’s Anatomy” recently discussed her struggle to achieve equal pay on the medical series, having been compensated less than co-star Patrick Dempsey for a long time, even though she portrayed the show’s titular character.
Ellen stated during the March 18 episode of Call Her Daddy, ‘I’m not implying he shouldn’t have received that money.’ However, since the show bears my name, I felt I deserved an equivalent share. It was more frustrating for me that they didn’t acknowledge my worth as much as his and likely never will.
The actor from “Good American Family,” who later negotiated a contract worth $20 million per season beginning with the 14th season, also shed light on the fact that the pay gap had been an issue since the show first aired in 2005.
Ellen went on to say, “I had 13 pilots ahead of me. Mine was the first one I’d ever done. In those days, you got paid a certain amount for each pilot you did for television. So, if you completed 13 TV pilots, your payment kept increasing. Now, let’s be clear, this wasn’t about any particular person, but it was just an observation that a man could have 13 unsuccessful TV pilots and still see his payment rise – his rate was what it was.
She remarked, “At that time, he was more renowned than me. Nobody recognized me yet, so indeed, he deserved that amount of money.
However, when it was time to request improved compensation, Ellen, who is a mother of three – Stella Luna (15), Sienna May (10), and Eli Christopher (8) with her husband Chris Ivery after 17 years – sought approval from show creator Shonda Rhimes prior to discussing the matter with the finance team.
Ellen clarified, “I told her, ‘I plan to ask for this amount. Is that okay with you?’ To avoid seeming disrespectful or unstable, and to keep her informed about my actions because I value her, I said this. She replied, ‘No one will just give it to you; you have to ask for it.’ I appreciate her, and she understands the importance of asking.
TopMob News reached out to ABC for comment but has not heard back.
Having successfully navigated my journey towards fairer compensation, I now view my experiences as a valuable resource I can wield to empower other women.
At a certain point, you can speak up for other women in your circle or work environment, she explained. If you find yourself earning significantly more than others, it’s not right to be content with that situation. You have a duty to investigate what everyone else is being paid and use your influence to say, “I value what I’m receiving, but I genuinely believe all the women here deserve a raise.
Currently in its 21st series, join us as we reminisce about the most surprising events in the history of Grey’s Anatomy.
Newcomer Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, got quite a surprise in the pilot episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. She discovered that the charming man she’d spent a night with at the bar, who was none other than Dr. Derek Shepherd, her new superior – a well-respected surgeon portrayed by Patrick Dempsey. Oh dear!
Spectators were equally taken aback as poor Meredith in the season one finale when Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) nonchalantly strolled into Seattle Grace and straight towards Mer and Derek, casually announcing herself by saying, “It appears you’re the woman who’s been sharing my husband.
In the heart-stopping moment during Grey’s Anatomy’s second season, airing after the Super Bowl, I held my breath as Meredith plunged her hand into a body cavity harboring a live bomb to prevent it from exploding. Just when relief started to swell among us fans as Dylan (the guest star Kyle Chandler) walked off with the disarmed explosive, it detonated, tragically claiming Dylan’s life instead.
Spectators witnessed Izzie (Katherine Heigl) developing feelings for Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a charming character waiting for a life-saving heart transplant, during the latter part of season two. Just like her, viewers found themselves drawn to him. However, when her daring scheme to sabotage Denny’s LVAD wire in an attempt to move him up the transplant list backfired disastrously, leading to his tragic demise in the season finale, it became clear that Grey’s Anatomy was not about providing the fairytale endings we desired.
In the midst of the harrowing ferry mishap during season three, what left me utterly astonished was discovering two unexpected incidents. First, the moment when Meredith found herself struggling against the icy waters after being swept away at the accident site. Second, her confession that she had, in fact, given up on survival at one point.
Towards the close of season three, a new surgical intern named Lexie (played by Chyler Leigh) joined Seattle Grace Hospital. She had an initial encounter with Derek the evening before she began work at the hospital, which echoed his earlier meeting with Mer two seasons back (fortunately without leading to a night together). Later, she was introduced to George O’Malley in the intern locker room. Notably, her surname was Grey, making her Meredith’s younger half-sister, one of two daughters fathered by Thatcher and his second wife Susan, thus entering the ensemble cast.
Approximately two-and-a-half seasons following his demise, Denny resurfaced, and his spirit found itself engaging in a romantic encounter with Izzie. In one of the most absurd scenes ever depicted on the show, the spectral Denny was employed to alert both viewers and Izzie herself that something was amiss. The underlying issue was eventually confirmed to be advanced stage IV melanoma, which had infiltrated various parts of her body, including her brain.
Instead of anticipating Izzie’s departure at the end of season five, the mystery surrounding George’s disappearance should have hinted that something was amiss with poor O’Malley. When Meredith eventually deciphered the message written by the bus accident victim – “007”, his unkind moniker from earlier seasons – she attempted to warn the operating team, but it was already too late. He flatlined and passed away.

In the finale of season six, following the merger with Mercy West, a desperate husband of a deceased patient entered the hospital, armed and bereft of hope. Tragically, several doctors were killed, many more were wounded, and an indelible image etched itself into our memory – that of Bailey (Chandra Wilson) being dragged by her feet from beneath a patient’s bed. Fortunately, she lived through it. Unfortunately, Mer and Derek’s baby did not; after he was shot, she believed him dead and suffered a harrowing miscarriage.
Two years following a devastating hospital shooting incident, Shonda Rhimes felt it was appropriate to put a group of doctors through more hardships. In the final episode of the eighth season, a plane carrying Meredith, Derek, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Lexie, Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) en route to Boise, Idaho for a surgery on conjoined twins, crashed in the wilderness. This left them stranded, injured, with no one back home aware of their predicament. The crash resulted in the deaths of Mark and Lexie, the loss of Arizona’s leg, and Derek narrowly escaping permanent hand damage.
How did Grey’s Anatomy bid farewell to Cristina Yang, played by Sandra Oh, at the end of season 10? By inviting back Preston Burke, Cristina’s former fiancé (Isaiah Washington), who had left her at the altar in season three. It was quite unexpected for the show to bring Washington back after his controversial exit, where he used a derogatory term towards co-star T.R. Knight, a move that caused much controversy.
In the season 10 finale, as Cristina bid farewell, a new character stepped into her shoes as head of cardio-thoracic surgery – Dr. Maggie Pierce. And when it was disclosed in the last scene that this character, portrayed by Kelly McCreary, was none other than Dr. Ellis Grey’s daughter, Richard (James Pickens Jr.) was left just as surprised as everyone else upon learning he had a daughter and Mer had another sibling.
It came as a complete surprise when, during season 11, with only a few episodes left, Derek was written off the show following a fatal car accident after saving a family on the road who had also been involved in a crash. This sudden departure of Patrick Dempsey, despite his recent contract extension, was indeed unexpected. Since writing off Mer’s husband might have been the only viable way for Shonda Rhimes to write the character out without ruining an 11-year love story entirely, it didn’t make the pain any less intense.
In the course of events, Mer found herself in an unexpectedly harrowing situation during the ninth episode of season 12. She was viciously assaulted by a patient, resulting in a horrific incident that shattered her jaw and necessitated it being wired shut to aid in hearing restoration. A poignant acting moment occurred when Mer suffered a panic attack because her children couldn’t visit her during her recovery, a powerful portrayal by Ellen Pompeo.
The series could portray Alex Karev’s unexpected departure following Justin Chambers’ exit from the role during season 16 by depicting him writing letters to Jo (Camilla Luddington), Mer, and Bailey. In these letters, he reveals that he reconnected with Izzie, who had ghosted him and sent him divorce papers years ago, only to discover she had been raising their twin children on a farm somewhere. Touched by this new family, he chose to leave his life in Seattle behind to be with them. If anyone claims they saw this twist coming, we’ll prove them a liar.
In the seventeenth season, viewers witnessed the unfortunate demise of Dr. Andrea “Andrew” DeLuca, portrayed by Giacomo Gianniotti. After battling his mental health issues, DeLuca advanced to become an attending physician at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. However, in keeping with the dramatic style of Grey’s Anatomy, the life that seemed to be back on track for Dr. DeLuca was suddenly cut short when he was stabbed by a henchman involved in human trafficking.
