In the thrilling finale of The Last of Us season 2, action is served hot and heavy without any prelude. Unlike previous episodes, this one dives straight into Ellie’s storyline in Seattle, continuing her journey along Joel’s path. It seems as though we’re only now getting started with The Last of Us season 2, yet it provides a complete picture of the characters and their high-stakes situations. One can’t help but wish for additional episodes in season 2, but all we can do is eagerly await the possibility of season 3 arriving swiftly.

Bella Ramsey finds herself alone once more, as character Ellie struggles with the repercussions of bringing her closest loved ones to Seattle throughout the series. It was a delight to see Pedro Pascal return in ‘The Last of Us’ season 2, episode 6, making it the most poignant moment of the season. Placing the flashback episode before the season finale could have been a misstep, but it effectively added to the show’s impact.

Joel’s loss still hurts deeply as we accompany Ellie into perilous and reckless territory, realizing why she must embark on this journey.

Ellie Realizes Just How Much She Has To Lose In The Last Of Us Season 2 Finale

Her Actions Have Consequences, Just Like Joel’s Did

In the final episode of The Last of Us season 2, it is Ramsey and Young Mazino who take center stage. The presence of Jesse challenges Ellie’s priorities, and she doesn’t always come across favorably. The choice Ellie faces between reuniting with Tommy or pursuing Abby symbolizes her development throughout the season. However, Ellie has been under a misconception throughout the finale and the entire season – she thinks that her actions are independent of those who matter most to her, a belief that lingers until the very end of the episode.

In the final episode of season 2, Isabela Merced plays a less prominent role, as Ellie finds herself isolated as her allies gradually disband. This leaves Ellie to contemplate the kind of person she wants to be. Throughout this ordeal, Dina’s presence and the baby symbolizing the future play significant roles in shaping Ellie and the narrative. I was taken aback when Ellie revealed to Dina what Joel had done at the hospital, but it seemed necessary for someone to grasp the complete motivations behind Ellie and Joel’s worldview.

The final episode of the season underscores the significant contrasts between Ellie and Jesse regarding their perspectives on community and society. These disparate viewpoints, notably when Jesse admits he never supported Ellie’s initial selection, act as a narrative vehicle for the season’s overarching theme. It is somewhat unexpected that Ellie didn’t anticipate this, but her inability to balance the needs of the collective with individual concerns has made her just as resolute as Joel, and unfortunately, this inflexibility has not served her well.

I think it would have been beneficial to establish more background tension between Ellie and Jesse in the story, as their heated argument seems somewhat abrupt and contrived to heighten Jesse’s tragic end. The imagery of Ellie killing a pregnant woman before reuniting with Dina isn’t missed by me. It may not be as symbolic as it appears, but rather a hint of things to come, given the consistent theme in The Last of Us that actions have consequences. The forthcoming third season of The Last of Us seems poised to explore this further, possibly leading Ellie to lose everything she cares about.

She embarked on a quest to avenge Joel’s demise, believing she had nothing left to hold onto, but this belief was misguided. I almost fell for the illusion that our protagonists would safely return to the theater and perhaps resume their lives in Jackson peacefully. However, such an outcome was never in store, as The Last of Us held its most pivotal twist until the very end of the narrative. Ellie’s fortunes have finally turned sour, and she must now face the consequences for her destructive journey.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Finale Waits For The Final Moments To Set Up The Episode’s Biggest Twist

Abby’s Return Has Been Highly Anticipated, And She Doesn’t Disappoint

Kaitlyn Dever’s role as Abby may have been limited in season 2, but season 3 is expected to give us more of Abby than viewers might anticipate. As players likely felt when the focus shifted to Abby, I find myself both curious and somewhat resentful. Following two seasons spent tracking down Abby and an episode near the end that made Joel’s death hit even harder, it seems challenging for The Last of Us to make me care about her character. Nevertheless, given the show’s knack for evoking emotions, I am ready to accompany Abby through season 3.

I’m really looking forward to not having to wait another two years for season 3. Abby’s character has been a distant antagonist, relentlessly focused on her vengeance, much like Ellie has been. So far, Ellie has suffered more from the violence of her actions than Joel, but as she loses each ally, she becomes more willing to take lives. The struggle between Abby and Ellie reflects the strife between the Scars and the WLF, which underscores the broader theme of The Last of Us, reminding us that there are no victors in war.
