Instead of being satisfied with reportedly ranking among the world’s top 20 Diablo 4 players and managing six companies, Elon Musk, who refers to himself as the “Technoking of Tesla,” has now shifted his focus to Path of Exile 2. Since its launch in November, Musk has been showcasing his skills in action-RPGs, but his assertions have sparked some skepticism.
A recent exhibition highlighted some doubtful playstyle and organizational skills in managing items, leading members of the upcoming Path of Exile 2 community to gather together convincing proof suggesting Elon Musk might not be as dedicated a gamer as he portrays himself.
So good, he got banned.
Shortly following the release of Path of Exile 2, Elon boasted on his Twitter account that his exceptional skills in the game led to a temporary ban due to an excessive number of key presses. This could be seen as a show-off move, maybe.
In an effort to showcase his skill in the game, Elon Musk went live on January 7th, streaming his high-level character. For those unacquainted with Path of Exile 2, the community noticed several clues during the broadcast suggesting that Musk might not fully grasp the fundamentals of grinding in this action role-playing game, let alone master the expertise needed to reach his current level.
The stream that gave the game away
In an engaging Reddit discussion, participants scrutinized Musk’s live broadcast, highlighting apparent mistakes. To clarify, Musk’s character in Path of Exile 2, Percy_Verence, was ranked 7th on the leaderboard at the time of posting – a position that demands countless hours of gameplay to amass top-quality gear. Notably, “Hardcore” refers to a mode where if your character perishes, they are permanently eliminated, and Musk has already had numerous high-level characters in this challenging setting.
- Struggled to realize his mana was drained, clicking aimlessly for 10 seconds before using a flask.
- Left valuable loot on the ground while picking up loot inconsequential for his player level.
- Entered maps with a full inventory, attempting to pick up items manually despite having no space.
- Seemed confused about fundamental inventory management in general.
Currently, I don’t consider myself an expert in Path of Exile 2 or Diablo 4, and I certainly wouldn’t live-stream my gameplay for others to critique. However, the errors you’re making seem to be basic ones, typically not associated with someone who claims proficiency in the game.
Does Elon Musk account share?
10 days following its release, Elon Musk live-streamed Path of Exile 2 from an airplane to showcase Starlink. It wasn’t just a casual 25-minute gameplay session, though. He opted to take on the Arbiters of Ash, a challenge that demands numerous hours of grueling grinding and the collection of materials from nine Citadels.
It’s quite remarkable how he manages to find hundreds of spare hours considering his extensive business ventures. During the stream, however, Musk played using a character named MonkEBiznizz. This character, when players have attempted to communicate for trades in the chat, has defaulted to Chinese. Additionally, Musk was playing on the Hong Kong realm and seemed to be having trouble completing the content, which led some viewers to tease him in the chat.
Players have also noted that in his latest stream, the stash tabs are named strangely, with one being ‘Elon’s Map’, suggesting that the account may be shared or managed by others.
This suggests that the tab was custom-made for Elon Musk’s convenience. Furthermore, it appears he may not fully grasp how he has assembled his own equipment during live streaming, given his comment that the weapon is only suitable for level 62 characters, while his character is at level 95. To be honest, this seems irrelevant to me as a beginner Diablo 4 player, since it’s the item’s level that matters more than the character level. As Reddit user frenchpatato has noted, it’s actually a “tier staff of the mirror”, which implies a high-quality, powerful item.
Could Elon Musk be inflating his Diablo 4 performance too?
The assertion that Elon Musk ranks 19th among the best Diablo 4 players globally has always struck me as dubious, though I’ve never voiced my doubts – until now. Although Diablo 4 isn’t as intricate as Path of Exile 2, making Musk’s claim somewhat plausible, the way top players are ranked leaves much to be desired.
Unlike Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, this game doesn’t have official leaderboards. Instead, rankings depend on players completing The Pit and reporting their results on external platforms like Helltide.com. Finishing 19th on this leaderboard is still an impressive accomplishment, but it’s worth mentioning that many top-tier players probably don’t report their scores.
To attain the Pit levels Musk claims to have completed, which he has live-streamed alongside renowned Diablo 4 streamer Rob, requires almost perfect gear. Acquiring this necessitates countless hours of farming, re-rolling stats, and spending gold. While Musk’s collaboration with Rob was undeniably entertaining, it’s challenging to imagine an amateur like Musk – who manages numerous companies – keeping up with a professional streamer whose livelihood revolves around the game. Even other CEOs have questioned this claim. Siqi Chen, CEO of Runway, stated, “I hear reliable information that the most stringent NDA on the planet is the one signed by the team of pro gamers ghostplaying Diablo IV for Elon.” He later added, with a hint of admiration, that if he had unlimited resources, chasing gaming world records would be how he’d spend it too – and he respects Musk for doing so (assuming that is what he is actually doing).
Jury is out, but Elon, you don’t have to be the best
Absolutely, it’s worth noting that while Elon Musk’s gaming skills haven’t been definitively proven, there’s a possibility he might outperform many of us in gaming. For instance, Brendan Lowry from our team tested his Elden Ring build and found it could use some improvement, but it wasn’t abysmal either.
The main point to remember is that being average or even poor at games doesn’t make you any less of a gamer. The gaming world welcomes all skill levels. However, if you aim to be the best in an action role-playing game (ARPG) like Elden Ring, be prepared for other players to closely examine your strategies and performance.
