According to recent news, it’s been said that Elon Musk attempted to purchase OpenAI. However, it seems like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has swiftly declined the offer, as suggested by the latest updates.
Elon Musk and Sam Altman from OpenAI have a friendly yet competitive dynamic. Initially, OpenAI was focused on non-profit research, but under Musk’s accusation of straying from its roots, it has been moving towards profit-oriented ventures, especially with Microsoft as a significant partner. Consequently, OpenAI is now divided into two entities: one maintaining the non-profit status, while the other is involved in partnerships worth billions with Microsoft and other investors. Notably, the latest funding round valued the company at approximately $157 billion.
Different businesses are fiercely competing to claim the number one position in the current space industry, with Google Gemini, Llama from Meta, and Chinese competitors like DeepSeek keeping things exciting. OpenAI is typically ahead of the pack, collaborating with Microsoft’s Copilot and spearheaded by ChatGPT.
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence project, xAI (by chatbot Grok), is challenging OpenAI with its own models, reflecting Musk’s persistent ambition to surpass OpenAI, which stems from past tensions with Sam Altman. In 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI but later departed due to clashes with Tesla’s early AI endeavors. OpenAI’s legal team hints that Musk’s departure might have been due to his desire for more control within the company.
According to reports, if a company can’t outdo another one naturally, they may try to do so artificially, and this seems to be the strategy that Elon Musk has attempted. Today, it was reported by WSJ that an offer of $97.4 billion, made unsolicited, was presented for the acquisition of OpenAI’s non-profit division. However, it’s possible that the group of unidentified investors, with Musk at the helm, has already had their bid turned down.
On Twitter, Altman playfully proposed purchasing something for a staggering $9.74 billion, adding a witty “no thanks” for good measure. Musk responded by labeling him a cunning trickster.

Elon Musk has also voiced his skepticism towards Sam Altman’s $500 billion “Stargate” initiative. This venture, backed by former President Trump, envisions OpenAI taking the lead in building an enormous network of servers intended to drive advancements in future AI technology. Trump’s decision to back Sam Altman and OpenAI might seem unusual, considering Musk’s close ties with the current U.S. administration.
In my analysis, I’ve noticed that Trump has endorsed the Stargate project in his past statements, describing it as a “powerful proclamation of faith in America’s capabilities.” Trump seems to downplay the competition between Altman and Musk, dismissively commenting to reporters, “[Musk] harbors animosity towards one of the individuals involved in the deal,” presumably referring to Altman.
In the field of artificial intelligence (AI), competition is fueling rapid advancements. For instance, a Chinese firm named DeepSeek has made significant waves, causing a drop in the value of AI stocks, as it’s rumored to be capable of emulating ChatGPT at a lower cost. However, OpenAI’s Deep Research project seems determined to stay ahead by quickly working towards cutting-edge AGI technology, which could enable AI models to truly comprehend context rather than just replicate it.
