Warning: Major spoilers for Elsbeth Season 2, Episode 19 titled “I’ve Got A Little List” lie ahead. Proceed with caution if you haven’t yet watched the episode. Catch up on the series with a Paramount+ subscription.
In the show, Elsbeth has primarily revolved around Carrie Preston’s character, Carrie, and her partnership with Kaya and Wagner. But here comes an unexpected twist: in an upcoming episode scheduled for 2025 television, it was disclosed that Carra Patterson’s character, Kaya, received an offer to join a task force. This will take her away from the precinct where Elsbeth operates, leading to less screen time for Kaya as the actress transitions from a series regular role to a guest star.
In the gripping 19th episode of Season 2, I learned that our beloved character Kaya has been given an opportunity to join a specialized task force, a move that will significantly alter her presence at the precinct in Season 3. This development follows her well-deserved promotion to detective earlier this season, and it’s heartening to witness her career advancement. However, I can’t help but feel a pang as this means we’ll be seeing less of Kaya. As a keen observer, I couldn’t help but share my thoughts when showrunner Jonathan Tolins shared with Deadline about this significant character shift.
I’m thrilled to see how Kaya has become such a wonderful companion for Elsbeth, and their relationship has touched us all deeply. We adore Carra and are ecstatic about her promotion and fulfilling her dream. Although she won’t be around as often, she’s not leaving the world of the show. I guess you could say she’ll still be with us, just from a distance. I don’t want to overstate the change because she’s still very much a part of our story.
Fortunately, Carra Patterson’s character isn’t permanently departed; instead, she will make occasional appearances on the show Elsbeth. It’s expected that these guest appearances will often coincide with cases that Elsbeth is also handling. However, this setup implies that she won’t be featured in every episode next season, which can be a bit disappointing.
Among all aspects of this series, I particularly enjoy Kaya and Elsbeth’s friendship. With Elsbeth getting renewed for Season 3 and Kaya being promoted to detective, I expected the upcoming season to explore how their bond changed as Patterson adapted to her new position. However, it was quite unexpected when she decided to leave.
Yet, it was evident that Kaya is regarded as “unreplaceable” by Tolins. Although her presence may diminish, it doesn’t mean she will be directly replaced. Instead, he clarified:
In our storytelling, we’ve found ourselves naturally introducing new characters and integrating them seamlessly. I don’t plan to cram anyone into the role that Kaya occupied on the show. Instead, we’ll let events unfold organically and experiment with different scenarios. It’s a delight to work with Carrie Preston, as she gets along splendidly with everyone. This isn’t going to be like the Darren Stevens predicament. We can’t replace Kaya; she’s unique. She remains part of our universe. So we’ll see where things lead us.

In the most recent installment, Officer Reynolds played by B character, reappeared. It’s also been announced that Ethan Slater, portraying Officer Chandler, is among the impressive lineup of guest stars for the Season 2 finale. I’m speculating we’ll carry on seeing these characters, along with potentially more officers, in Season 3. Moreover, Patterson’s character Kaya will likely be regularly partnered with detective Elsbeth throughout the upcoming season.
All in all, I believe this development suits the narrative well. Kaya’s determination and ambition are evident, and it’s gratifying to witness her finally securing the promotion she had long worked towards. Nevertheless, the fact that she won’t be with Elsbeth every week is tough to accept.
Fortunately, just as I mentioned earlier, the character of Carra Patterson won’t be completely absent, but rather, we’ll catch up with her later.
