As a lifelong fan of Elton John and musical theater, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming Devil Wears Prada musical. Having grown up listening to his iconic tunes and marveling at his flamboyant style, it’s truly fascinating to see him delve into the world of Broadway once more.
Elton John has shared several hints about the forthcoming musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada, such as revealing that one of its tunes ranks among his finest compositions.
In October, arriving at the West End will be the musical, led by actress Vanessa Williams from Desperate Housewives, with Sir Elton John sharing his reasons for composing its score.
I’m thrilled to pen tunes for this unique genre of music as it’s a blast, not like writing for Shakespeare! The costumes are outstanding, the actors are amazing, and the choreography is simply superb.
The renowned rockstar expressed that the performance was the result of a deep passion project, requiring approximately ten years to materialize. “It’s been a lengthy process – around a decade – creating something like this doesn’t happen overnight, and we’ve faced some unexpected obstacles along the way.
However, I’m absolutely thrilled about watching this musical, and since David [Furnish] got to see Billy Elliot first, he’s effectively serving as my eyes.
Although John’s reputation as a musical theatre composer doesn’t rival that of being a top-tier rock star, it is still recognized that he penned the tunes for Disney’s The Lion King, which earned him an Oscar, and also wrote the original West End production of Billy Elliot in 2005.
In collaboration with his spouse Furnish and Rocket Entertainments, he was involved in producing the musicals such as Tammy Faye, Next Fall, Rocktopia, Holler If Ya Hear Me, among others.
After everything that had passed, it came as a surprise when the 77-year-old voiced his opinion that the musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada featured one of his finest tunes to date.
In the first act, the second-to-last tune goes by “The Devil Wears Prada,” which to me sounds like something straight out of ABBA’s catalog, and it’s one of my all-time favorite compositions that I’ve penned.
He continued: “It’s just so much fun, it’s dance. It’s a real fun up-tempo musical and I just think people are going to go crazy and dance the night away to this musical.”
But despite its fun and up-beat style, John is clearly taking the show’s potential very seriously. “I’m taking this to Broadway and I want Vanessa to win the Tony.”
When and where can I see The Devil Wears Prada?
The Devil Wears Prada will run every Monday to Saturday from 24th October 2024 to 31st May 2025.
The performance is held at the Dominion Theatre, which can be found on Tottenham Court Road, and ticket prices begin at £25.
