Emilio Estevez’s Bizarre & Awesome MAX OVERDRIVE Sequel Plan!

Emilio Estevez recently chatted with the Happy Sad Confused podcast about a range of topics, including his career in Hollywood and his father’s time on the set of Francis Ford Coppola’s classic film, Apocalypse Now. He also shared some insights into potential projects that never came to fruition. Among these were scripts he penned for sequels to some of his favorite films, including a follow-up to Stephen King’s only directorial effort, Maximum Overdrive. This 1980s horror film, known for its unusual premise, was an adaptation of King’s short story, “Trucks.

This film was heavily criticized, earning two Golden Raspberry Award nominations – one for King in the Worst Director category and another for Estevez as Worst Actor. A project King himself has distanced from, even apologizing to Estevez for it. However, Estevez appears to have grown fond of this quirky midnight movie over time, despite not always feeling that way about it.

What Would This Maximum Overdrive Sequel Have Been and Is There Any Chance It Will Ever See the Light of Day?

Initially, Estevez clarified the reasons behind writing the sequel to Maximum Overdrive, revealing that the development of Artificial Intelligence was what sparked his creative idea.

As advanced computer tech and artificial intelligence became more prevalent, he began envisioning a follow-up to the movie Maximum Overdrive. During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, he penned it down.

Initially, the sequel’s script was primarily created for amusement and passing time, rather than with serious intentions of producing it, given that the actor doesn’t hold the rights to the original movie. However, it seems this script flowed naturally, though not like a computer-generated script.

He stated that he initially began with a single page, which represented the genesis of an idea. Now, he’s progressed to page 10, then moved on to page 20, and presently, he finds himself at about 50 pages. What’s intriguing is, he just can’t seem to halt his creation – it’s a wild, imaginative world he’s building.

In simpler terms, what would “Maximum Overdrive 2” be about? As described by Estevez, he reprises his role as protagonist Bill, who now runs a diner, has a young daughter, and manages a crew. On the day the world collapses and machines gain sentience, Guy Fieri is due to visit for an episode of “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

The ownership of the rights to King’s movie lies with The De Laurentiis Company, as they were responsible for producing the 1986 film under Dino De Laurentiis and his De Laurentiis Entertainment Group. Estevez pitched his idea for a sequel to the company, but despite it being considered “cool” and having a “great script,” the rights-holders decided against it.

He stated, “I’m afraid we must decline. This belongs to us, and we aren’t seeking any partnerships at this time. Instead, we plan to forge ahead with our own projects.

It’s hard to predict how well a sequel to “Maximum Overdrive” would perform. The original movie isn’t one of Stephen King’s most celebrated adaptations, but it does have the qualities that can turn a film into a cult classic. With its incredible AC/DC soundtrack and a memorable scene where a vending machine kills an adult, it certainly stands out.
