The family of Emily Willis is seeking compensation for a life-changing ordeal.
After receiving treatment at Malibu Lighthouse Treatment Centers for one year, Litzy Lara Banuelos’ family has initiated a lawsuit claiming abuse of a dependent adult, negligence, professional misconduct, and unethical business practices. This legal action stems from the current state of incapacitation of the 25-year-old.
The lawsuit, obtained by TopMob News on Dec 27, claims that the care facility’s neglect, recklessness, and negligence during Willis’ stay in January directly led to her sustaining severe brain damage, permanent physical and mental disabilities, pain, emotional distress, and various other harms.
At a high-end recovery facility, Willis sought treatment for an addiction to ketamine. According to court documents, she had been consuming five to six grams of the substance daily and was experiencing issues such as bladder inflammation, night terrors, anxiety, and PTSD. Upon her arrival, it was claimed by her caretaker, Yesenia Lara Cooper (the plaintiff), that Willis was underweight yet did not receive a meeting with a dietitian.
Additionally, the court documents allege that Willis’ condition worsened significantly prior to receiving treatment. The cited medical records indicate that she was experiencing severe pain, dehydration, and a urinary tract infection at the time.
For some time, Willis remained under the care of a Malibu rehabilitation facility, where medical records showed her health deteriorating. Unfortunately, on February 4th, approximately a week after her admission, she was discovered unconscious, as stated in the lawsuit. Subsequently, CPR was administered, and she was transferred to a nearby hospital, according to the court document.
In other places, the lawsuit claims that Willis repeatedly turned down medical attention from doctors. However, due to her vulnerability as an adult dependent, the on-duty doctors allegedly neglected to ensure a safe environment, appropriate care, and instead left her unattended for extended periods.
Willis’ family is demanding a compensation amount that matches the maximum allowed by law for the injuries she sustained, along with reimbursement, costs for legal representation, and all associated legal expenses.
