Eminem Shares What He’s Doing Amid Mom Debbie Nelson’s Death

As I delve into the intricate tapestry of Eminem‘s family, it’s evident that each thread is woven with its own unique story, pain, and triumph. Each member, from Hailie to Stevie Laine, Alaina, Debbie, and even his late father Nelson, has played a significant role in shaping the man we know as Eminem.

Eminem is losing himself in the music.

Following the passing of his mother Debbie Nelson, the artist known as “Houdini” re-emerged on social media to announce that he has been busy getting ready for a series of performances across various international locations, including Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

‘If you’re looking for Shady, here’s what I’m offering…,’ Marshall Bruce Mathers III (Eminem) stated in a December 4 Instagram post. “The MIDDLE EAST 2024 RUN begins this week. Feel free to join us!

The concert of this award-winning artist begins at Abu Dhabi’s Formula 1 Grand Prix on December 7, four days after it was confirmed to TopMob News by his representative that his mother had passed away after a long struggle with advanced lung cancer. She was 69 years old. It was reported back in September that the woman, who was then 69, was suffering from a terminal illness.

Eminem hasn’t made a direct comment on her death, but he has shared details about his challenging upbringing with Debbie, who married Eminem’s father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., when she was only 15 and gave birth to him just 16 months later.

In the year 2004, the 52-year-old individual, who had accused Debbie of abusing prescription pills in his 2002 hit “Cleanin’ Out the Closet”, opened up about the struggles he faced in gaining custody of his half-brother, Nathan “Nate” Mathers (currently 38 years old), after Nate was placed into foster care at the age of eight.

The rapper expressed to Rolling Stone that he had often stated, “If I ever had the chance to get him, I would,” following his removal. At age 20, he attempted to petition for full custody, but lacked the resources at the time.

He went on to say, “I wept upon visiting him at the foster home. The day they took him away, I was the one permitted to be with him. They had arrived and taken him from school unexpectedly. He was clueless about the situation.

When Nate was just 16 years old, Eminem was appointed as his legal guardian. Since then, the man behind the “8 Mile” character has developed a new viewpoint regarding his mother, although he confessed in 2009 that they had drifted apart.

He shared on BET’s 106 & Park in 2009 that he deeply cares for her, and his newfound self-awareness has given him a clearer perspective of what she might be experiencing. He added that this realization seems to have awakened some empathy within him.

As Kimberly Ann Scott, a native of Michigan, I was Eminem’s beloved high school companion. In the year 1995, we became proud parents to our beautiful daughter, Hailie Jade.

From 1999 to 2001, as well as for a short period in 2006, Kim was married to the rapper. Their stormy union has been alluded to in various songs by Eminem, such as “’97 Bonnie & Clyde,” “Puke,” and “Bad Husband.

In a 2007 interview with 20/20, Kim explained a recurring trend in their relationship: “Every two years, things go wrong for some reason. It seems like we can only last two years together, and at that point, we hadn’t even reached the two-year mark yet. I didn’t want to hurry into anything before those two years had passed.

However, Kim noted that Eminem has always been an “excellent” father.

“He loves the kids very much,” she shared. “He’s always lending a helping hand.”

On Christmas Day, 1995, rapper Eminem and his partner Kim gave birth to their daughter Hailie. As the popular musician expressed, this event served as a significant reminder for him to focus and get his life back on track.

In 2001, he expressed to Q magazine that everything he was engaged in at the moment was all about Hailie. He mentioned that the money was earmarked for her higher education.

She spent most of her youth under Eminem’s 15,000-square-foot roof in the Detroit suburbs, before attending Michigan State University to study psychology. There, she met her now-husband Evan McClintock, who she married in May 2024 after getting engaged the year prior.

Eminem expressed his satisfaction during an episode of Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson in 2020, stating that Hailie, now known as Hailie Jade, had graduated from college with a remarkable 3.9 GPA. He confirmed she has indeed made him proud.

In October 2024, Hailie announced her pregnancy with her and Evan’s first child, a baby boy.

Born on Feb. 22, 1993, Alaina is the daughter of Kim’s sister Dawn Scott

In the early 2000s, Eminem took guardianship of his niece because of her mother’s problems with substance abuse. As he stated in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2004, “I have full custody of my niece and joint custody of Hailie.” Ever since she was born, I’ve been a significant figure in her life, and my niece has been a part of mine as well. Kim and I essentially raised her, wherever we lived at the time.

Growing up predominantly under the care of Eminem, the Oakland University graduate refers to him as her father and asked him to walk her down the aisle during her wedding to Matt Moeller in June 2023.

She expressed afterwards in an interview with People, during the wedding ceremony where she was the Maid of Honor, that she wouldn’t have wanted to miss it. “Everything here wouldn’t have transpired without my father,” she added, feeling incredibly fortunate.

Her mother passed away in 2016 at the age of 41.

On April 16, 2002, Kim warmly received Stevie in the company of her partner at that time, Eric Hartter. Later, in 2005, Eminem officially made Stevie his son, as he reconnected with Kim.

In August 2021, Stevie announced their identity as nonbinary, expressing on TikTok that they prefer to be referred to by all types of pronouns.

They added in the caption, “forever growing and changing.”

Born in 1955 at a military base in Kansas, Debbie is the mother of Eminem.

In her 2008 memoir titled “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem”, she revealed that she got married to the father of the artist who is famously known for his song “Without Me” (Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr.) when she was just 15 years old. Seventeen months later, she conceived Eminem and subsequently moved to Michigan, a place where her maternal grandmother resided.

Debbie and Eminem’s turbulent relationship has been portrayed in various songs of his, like the 2002 hit “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.” In this song, he claimed that Debbie used prescription drugs when he was a child, an allegation she refuted in her autobiography.

“What mother wants to be known as a pill-popping alcoholic who lives on welfare?” she wrote. “None of it was true, but the fibs kept getting bigger, and ultimately Marshall and I became estranged.”

Nevertheless, Eminem later showed remorse for publicly discussing his family matters. In his 2013 song “Headlights,” he rapped, “I dove headfirst without considering who or what I might have harmed with my words / It’s likely that in some lines, my mother bore the brunt of it.

Nelson died at the age of 69 in 2024 following a battle with cancer.
