Emma Mackey is heading to Narnia.
Actress from “Barbie” is set to collaborate with director Greta Gerwig again, having been chosen to portray the White Witch in an upcoming “Narnia” movie slated for release on Netflix, as reported by various sources.
As Jadis, the White Witch, Mackey is set to portray the main adversary in the magical realm of Narnia, a character responsible for weaving the enchantment that prolongs wintry conditions.
Emma will be part of an ensemble that features Daniel Craig playing Digory Kirke’s uncle and Meryl Streep as the majestic lion Aslan. As per Deadline, more specifics have yet to be disclosed. The movie is scheduled to debut on Netflix during Christmas 2026 following a two-week run in IMAX cinemas first.
Netflix shared news of their plans to adapt the series in 2018.
In a statement for the press, Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, expressed that C.S. Lewis’ enchanting Chronicles of Narnia tales have touched the hearts of readers globally for generations. He added that families have developed a deep affection for characters such as Aslan and the entire Narnian universe, and he is delighted that Netflix will be their permanent dwelling place in the future.
2026 sees the debut of Netflix’s initial adaptation of “Narnia”, even though Netflix hasn’t disclosed further plans for the series. The upcoming film is said to be based on the sixth book in the series, “The Magician’s Nephew”, which delves into the origin tale of Narnia, as reported by Deadline.
Netflix’s adaptation isn’t the initial time the Chronicles of Narnia series has been translated to film. Previously, Disney had released three films based on the books in 2005, 2008, and 2010 with Tilda Swinton, James McAvoy, Georgie Henley, among others, as the main cast. However, further adaptations of the remaining books were halted afterwards.
However, Gerwig is excited to bring the books back to life on screen as she takes on the project.
She expressed a subtle sense of fear because her affection for Narnia is profound, having cherished it deeply as a child. Speaking on BBC Radio 4 in January 2024, she acknowledged that C.S. Lewis, the author of Narnia, is an influential thinker and writer, which makes this endeavor seem significant and worthy enough to feel intimidated by.
Next month, she expressed a similar feeling by saying that she aims to create an adaption that feels enchanting or spellbinding.
The director expressed during an interview for TIME’s Woman of the Year that she’s had a deep affection for C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books since childhood, stating they were among her most cherished childhood books along with Little Women. She admitted feeling both exhilaration and apprehension at the prospect of working on something so influential in her life. Her aim is to create an experience that feels enchanting.
Indeed, Gerwig expresses enthusiasm about breathing new life into these books on the big screen by embarking on this magical film adaptation.
She expressed her feelings as follows: “I feel a touch of fear since my admiration for Narnia is immense, I was deeply fond of Narnia when I was young,” she said on BBC Radio 4 in January 2024. “As an adult, C.S. Lewis is someone I greatly respect, both as a thinker and a writer. This project seems daunting, something that feels deserving of such trepidation.
A month later, she expressed the same feeling, stating that she wanted the adaptation to seem enchanting.
The director expressed that she has cherished C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books since childhood, stating they were two pivotal reads during her youth alongside “Little Women.” She admitted feeling a mixture of immediate excitement and fear as she prepared to work on something so influential in her life. Her goal is to create an enchanting experience for the audience.
