As a cinephile who vividly remembers the scandal and sensation caused by Emmanuelle back in the 70s, I must admit that I was initially skeptical when I heard about this reboot. However, after watching the trailer for Audrey Diwan’s modern adaptation, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. As a man of a certain age who has seen his fair share of softcore pornography, I can tell you that this new Emmanuelle is not just a fish supper; it looks like a stylish and sophisticated take on the original.
What particularly caught my attention was the focus on female autonomy and desire, as well as the exploration of intimacy and gender dynamics. As someone who has spent countless hours analyzing films, I can appreciate Diwan’s attempt to redefine the boundaries of contemporary erotic cinema. The fact that this reimagining is based on the iconic novel by Emmanuelle Arsan only adds to its appeal.
That being said, it remains to be seen whether this film will live up to the expectations set by the trailer and push the envelope as much as the original did back in 1974. But one thing is for sure; I am looking forward to seeing Emmanuelle on the big screen next year. And who knows, maybe it’ll even have a few surprises up its sleeve that will make me laugh like a schoolboy again!
Individuals who attended school during the 1970s might recall the adult-themed film titled “Emmanuelle,” starring Sylvia Kristel as the titular character. The story follows the wife of a French diplomat in Bangkok, who embarks on a journey often referred to as ‘exploring oneself.’ In reality, this journey consisted of a series of sensual encounters that, compared to today’s easily accessible adult content on the internet, may seem tame like a simple fish dinner. Despite its modest sexual tension in comparison to modern standards, “Emmanuelle” was highly profitable and led to numerous sequels, with a reboot now being released, as evidenced by the recently unveiled Emmanuelle trailer.
This upcoming movie focuses on a woman exploring a collection of sensual daydreams. Emmanuelle finds herself yearning for a long-lost sense of pleasure. Alone, she travels to bustling Hong Kong for business matters. In this city known for its sensuality, she initiates various interactions and eventually crosses paths with Kei, an enigmatic man who remains just out of her reach. Audrey Diwan’s film, loosely based on Emmanuelle Arsan’s novel, offers a female perspective on the intimate journey of a woman whose name is synonymous with one of cinema’s most daring characters.
Drawing inspiration from Emmanuelle Arsan’s renowned novel, Diwan’s reinterpretation presents a contemporary and revitalized viewpoint. By merging sensuality with a compelling storyline emphasizing female independence and desire, EMMANUELLE reshapes the limits of modern erotic filmmaking – characterized by deep emotions, delving into intimacy and examining gender roles.
It’s uncertain if this will turn out to be the unedited, mature presentation of breasts like the original version. However, based on the visuals presented, it seems to be stylishly filmed for sure.
Emmanuelle is released on 17th January 2025
