Emmerdale airs moving Zak Dingle tribute in special ITVX episode

As a long-time Emmerdale enthusiast who has followed the Dingle family’s turbulent journey for decades, I must say that Friday’s episode was a poignant and powerful tribute to Zak Dingle. The way they delved into the complexities of each character’s relationship with their father was nothing short of masterful storytelling.

During Zak Dingle’s (Steve Halliwell) memorial service at the Woolpack, an emotional episode of Emmerdale spotlighted three of his cherished offspring, each offering heartfelt tributes to their adored father.

During their conversation, the trio consisting of Cain (Jeff Hordley), Sam (James Hooton), and Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) reminisced about various memories. It was also revealed that unlike other family members, Cain wasn’t raised by Zak.

Sam conveyed that Zak announced Cain as the new family leader, but Cain rejected this notion, feeling unqualified for the role.

In simpler terms, Cain shared his difficulties dealing with Moira’s (Natalie J Robb) brain tumor. He confessed he was finding it tough, but things took a turn when Sam suggested a hug, to which Cain responded harshly, saying “Back off, you overweight lout.

Belle firmly believed that Cain’s power was similar to Zak’s, yet he often displayed behaviors such as fleeing or becoming aggressive. On the other hand, Sam lamented over his perceived failure in shielding Lydia (Karen Blick) and their son Samson (Sam Hall).

It felt uncomfortable for Cain that everyone was discussing Zak’s accomplishments as if their father should be considered flawless when compared to the others.

Cain mentioned the time when Zak came close to taking his life, which made Belle extremely angry, while Cain was astounded that she had any knowledge of this incident at all.

Speaking candidly about past events and expressing regret, Cain reflected upon the chaos that consumed him earlier, leading to an unplanned pregnancy for a young woman named Amy (portrayed by Chelsea Halfpenny or Natalie Ann Jamieson). During this period, he had brought turmoil to the entire village.

After hearing Cain compliment Sam’s parenting skills, Belle felt moved, and she appreciated the fact that Cain acknowledged Zak’s consistent efforts, regardless of whether they were correct or not.

After winding down at the local tavern, I found myself back home, giving my friends their space for their intimate conversation. Not long after, Belle confessed her remorse for not extricating herself from the abusive marriage with Tom King (James Chase) earlier, but Cain reassured her that she’s always been a fighter at heart.

On a more playful note, they broke into a rendition of the well-known tune “Hillbilly Rock”, which was last played at Jane Cox’s second wedding with Zak and Lisa.

Towards the end of the show, Cain delivered an emotional speech about Zak and the Dingle ethos, as snippets of past scenes featuring Zak were shown and his voice echoed through with messages on love and devotion.

At Zak’s graveside, Sam found their father’s distinctive cap and humorously put it on Cain’s head. Cain mentioned that he would consult Moira about the item, and they – Sam, Cain, and Belle – decided to take turns leading the Dingle family.

Rather than bidding farewell, they greeted their father with a “good morning”, leaving Zak to find tranquility. This heartfelt gesture served as a touching tribute to both Zak and the late actor Halliwell during the 30th anniversary week of the Dingles’ arrival.

Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
