Emmerdale recreates iconic scene with Aaron Dingle and new Sugden in ITVX early release

As a long-time Emmerdale aficionado with memories etched deep into my soap opera soul, I must say, the writers have once again managed to weave a tale that harkens back to its rich history. The return of John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) is not just a simple cameo, but a clever nod to one of the show’s most iconic storylines – the Aaron and Robert Sugden saga.

⚠️ Note: This discussion reveals plot details from the August 7th, 2024 episode of Emmerdale, now streaming on ITVX. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers!

In a playful nod to its past, Emmerdale has introduced a familiar narrative by bringing back John Sugden (played by Oliver Farnworth)!

Prior to a larger upset scheduled for later in the week, Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) was seething at Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson), after discovering that Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) had coerced Jai into dismissing Victoria from The Hide through extortion.

Jai secretly put glass in a pizza as a trick to blame Vic, so she warned him that if he didn’t return her position at work, she would sue him for all he was worth.

In the face of Victoria’s firm gaze, Jai found himself yielding. Pollard expressed his regrets to Victoria, who acknowledged that he possessed a sense of guilt that seemed absent in Jai.

Following my sign-up on a dating app, I found myself arranging a meet-up at a hotel, but an unexpected hiccup occurred – I lost my car keys! In a pinch, I asked Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) for a favor, and he graciously agreed to let me borrow his car, which had been parked at the garage for servicing.

On my way to the movies, I found myself pulled over by a fellow film enthusiast, waving frantically from the side of the road. He urgently requested to use my phone to contact a nearby mechanic, as his car had broken down right there on the spot.

It turned out that the person Aaron mentioned he was going to meet was actually the stranger he had arranged to see – and as we’ve learned, that individual is none other than John Sugden.

Absolutely, Aaron didn’t notice this detail while working on John’s car engine. During their conversation, they exchanged jokes, and at one point, Aaron mentioned that he seldom talks much during a date. John responded by saying that he had been curious when Aaron would stop talking.

After that, they sealed their emotions with a kiss, as intense feelings swept through them. This scene might seem familiar to you, as it bears a striking resemblance to the emotional exchange between Aaron and his former spouse, Robert Sugden (played by Ryan Hawley) – yes, John’s own half-brother!

After the situation ended, Aaron engaged in casual conversation, but John found it unpleasant. In the instant when Aaron wasn’t looking, John stole away in Pollard’s vehicle, abandoning Aaron without any money or identification.

Mack was seething because Aaron had misplaced Pollard’s vehicle, and hadn’t even managed to learn the man’s name. Victoria too voiced her doubts about Aaron’s judgment, and both Mack and Aaron were perplexed as to how to dodge the anger of Pollard and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley).

In the year 2014, I found myself witnessing an unforgettable moment as Robert shared his first kiss with Aaron, all while Aaron was swiping Robert’s sleek vehicle! Fast forward nearly a decade, and Emmerdale has brilliantly revisited this iconic scene, even bringing back John’s witty, deadpan one-liners.

However, once Victoria discovers John, does he go after Aaron, or is John’s intention something other than what Robert had in mind?

Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
