This week, overwhelmed by the difficulties of the year, Belle King was pushed further into a mental crisis due to the passing of her cherished father, causing yet another emotional collapse.

It’s not surprising that the beloved character from Emmerdale is finding it tough to cope with her persistent mental health problems, given the traumatic experiences she has endured due to her abusive marriage to Tom.

Following numerous instances of manipulative domination, subtle psychological abuse, and violent outbursts, Belle has ultimately managed to free herself from her oppressive union.

Contrarily, just as Eden Taylor-Draper explains, it doesn’t automatically resolve all issues related to her character.

In addition, she believed she had hidden the abuse from her father, so learning that he was aware of it sent her over the edge. The hallucinations and voices she experiences are focused on Zak; she yearns to reach him and find solace.

In a strikingly parallel scenario, the loss of Zak resonates deeply with her due to the passing of her mother Lisa. This tragic event acts as a catalyst, causing her emotional state to deteriorate significantly. Experiencing the loss of a parent can have an enduring impact on one’s life.

The saga of Tom’s creepy coercion has been a slow burn for the soap, building from a cute courtship and fairy tale wedding before evolving into micro-manipulations and full-blown violence. It’s one of Emmerdale’s most engaging and talked-about stories in recent memory.

The data astounded me when I learned about the number of individuals trapped in abusive relationships and how long it might take them to free themselves, or worse, they may never manage to escape.

Discovering Tom’s misuse of technology has been quite shocking. For instance, he secretly places cameras around our home, monitors her mobile device, and reads all messages – it’s truly terrifying, yet this behavior persists.

Despite its harrowing nature, the plot unfolds honestly and keeps viewers engrossed due to unexpected turns and inventive narration. For instance, who would have foreseen the axe striking Tom’s back? Certainly not him…

In her challenging narrative, Taylor-Draper singles out a specific episode as the most demanding trial she faced, due to its innovative techniques such as flashbacks, dream sequences, and multiple viewpoints on the same event.

She mentions that the episode where Belle imagined various possibilities for her future was among her favorites, and it was also the most difficult one to portray.

“We demonstrated the potential consequences if she continued with Tom, and there was a sequence where she envisioned being pregnant and marked by bruises – it was heart-wrenching yet compelling. Furthermore, when Belle ended up in the hospital, heavily medicated, and required restraint on the bed, that was quite intense.

Despite appearing calm, Taylor-Draper has been accustomed to the intense pressures of soap acting for nearly two decades, starting her career at the tender age of eight.

Just like how viewers have seen actors like Jack P Shepherd (David Platt from Coronation Street) and Natalie Cassidy (Sonia Fowler from EastEnders) mature on screen since their early days, Taylor-Draper’s portrayal of Belle has been a long-term part of our soap opera experience. It’s the special bond we share with her character that makes Belle’s trials and tribulations particularly poignant to witness.

Lisa Dingle, known as Tinkerbelle, entered the world unconventionally on December 25th, 1998, in a pigpen. Remarkably, her mother wasn’t aware she was expecting at all.

By 2005, there was a desire among producers to expand Belle’s screen presence and recast the role. Taylor-Draper, brimming with star quality and confidence, entered the scene, taking on the lead role for the first time in a significant plot, where her character tumbled into a mineshaft on her seventh birthday – quite an impressive debut.

Reflecting back, she notes that her parents found her bursting with energy as a child, so they enrolled her in various clubs to help expend this boundless enthusiasm. At our local church, I joined a drama club and performed in a play based on Oliver Twist. Incidentally, an agent was present during the performance who encouraged me to audition for Emmerdale, and that’s how it all started.

On my initial day of shooting, I recall being at The Woolpack set and thinking Mark Charnock (Marlon Dingle) towered over everyone like the Big Friendly Giant (BFG), he was the tallest person I had ever encountered in real life! During a scene, Jane Cox (Lisa Dingle) needed to cry, and she did so promptly when directed. This left me puzzled, as I wondered if she was upset, but she quickly assured me, “I’m fine; I’m just acting!” This concept took some time for me to grasp!

During the initial stages, I found great pleasure, but it wasn’t until around age 11 or 12 that I truly realized my passion for acting and decided I wanted to dedicate myself to it for a lifetime.

As a Dingle native, I feel incredibly fortunate to have been raised surrounded by the most gifted, courteous, and compassionate individuals. Among them, Steve Halliwell, the esteemed actor who portrayed Zak, served as a role model for me. He instilled in me the importance of hard work, a value that has stayed with me throughout my life. Moreover, he emphasized that everyone deserves equal treatment, regardless of their status or position.

“Being punctual, putting in effort, and being friendly are essential traits. Even when you’re exhausted, you must still make it to work by seven o’clock sharp, without any laxity. This discipline instilled in me a structured daily routine as a child and played a significant role in shaping my character and values regarding how I interact with others.

Whenever fans approach me for conversation, I strive to maintain politeness. I’ve learned from Steve and my fellow cast members that it’s our loyal fans who keep our show alive.

Growing up, my family was incredibly ordinary yet extraordinary, providing a sense of normalcy that kept me grounded. I never perceived myself as distinct from my siblings because they weren’t in the public eye. As a result, I can’t compare my childhood experiences to anything else since it was the only world I knew.

Initially, Belle was adored as Zak and Lisa’s playful, charming kid. However, she transformed into a troubled adolescent grappling with deep-seated issues. Tragically, an incident involving her schoolmate Gemma resulted in her death, which left Belle struggling to cope. Eventually, at the tender age of 16, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia, marking the beginning of a compelling narrative journey for the character.

Taylor-Draper remembers feeling both eager and prepared for the task at hand when he received that story. However, there was also a hint of apprehension in him,” or simply, “Taylor-Draper recalled being thrilled, ready, but also slightly anxious when he got the story.

I had a lot of support during the process, which made all the difference. It’s wonderful that we’re still delving into it now, rather than letting it fall by the wayside – that wouldn’t have been plausible.

Just as I feel strongly about projects that aim to create change, I find it incredibly rewarding when given the chance to contribute significantly at a young age. It’s truly an honor to have this opportunity.

Taylor-Draper deeply values her role in advocating for survivors of abuse, and she emphatically conveys that Belle’s resilient nature is not so easily broken. She hints at the approaching culmination of the plot, suggesting that justice will ultimately triumph in the end.

Ever since Belle confessed the abuse to Charity, who is a dear friend of mine (Emma Atkins), it has been incredibly meaningful to capture this on film. This revelation seems to have inspired many people to seek help in their own difficult situations. I feel a sense of pride in knowing that I’ve played a small part in helping others. Moreover, as Belle grows stronger, the audience finds courage and resilience alongside her.

Wrongdoers eventually face their consequences, and the creators had a definitive conclusion planned to demonstrate that it’s possible to break free from such relationships. Of course, the path won’t be easy, and there’s still a journey ahead, but reaching that destination will make the end result all the more satisfying.

Can we not conclude without inquiring if Belle will be reunited with Piper, the lovable dog whom Tom falsely led her to believe she had killed as a manipulative tactic, but secretly rehomed? If Tom’s time is running out, could that mean Piper can finally emerge from hiding?

Taylor-Draper smiles, expressing a strong hope that we haven’t yet witnessed the final appearance of Piper (whose real name is Minnie). This character holds a special place for her, and the audience seems to adore her as well. However, in every scene together, Piper manages to outshine me significantly – just consider when Tom trapped Belle in the holiday cottage; it was Piper who truly owned that episode!

“But if I have to share the limelight with anyone, I’m happy to be in her shadow. She deserves it!”
