It’s completely normal to have an occasional anxiety dream before your wedding, but instead of typical worries, Emmerdale’s John Sugden is envisioning a sequence of particularly frightening nightmares where the past unexpectedly disrupts his and Aaron Dingle’s upcoming marriage.

John, who’s been preoccupied with quite a bit lately – like hiding an unintentional homicide, contaminating the town water source, and causing his former partner to fall into a coma – isn’t shocking Oliver Farnworth that he’s having restless nights.

In this show, viewers are given glimpses into the unpredictable thought process of the main character through a series of stylish dream sequences spread throughout the episodes. At the start of each episode, we see a different nightmare scenario depicting potential mishaps at the wedding, which tie back to John’s past mistakes.

What’s primarily on his mind is the possibility of finding Nate Robinson’s body – accidentally killed by John eight months ago and subsequently discarded into the lake. This area needs dredging now, as it appears Mr. Sugden has devised a scheme involving slurry to tarnish the reputation of his arch-rival, Mackenzie Boyd.

It’s widely believed that Nate fled to Scotland, so it’s likely that queries will arise once his body is eventually found in the water.

Farnworth adds, “Finding Nate’s body is truly chilling, and it undeniably calls for a full-blown criminal investigation. Such an investigation could lead to dire outcomes for John – he might be shunned by everyone, imprisoned, or forced to leave his current life behind. He stands to lose everything.

In addition to the uncertain future of Nate, there’s the danger presented by Aidan Moore, an old lover and fellow soldier of John’s who he claims tried to help, but has been in a coma until now. It seems that Aidan has regained consciousness, which could potentially spell trouble for John, as we don’t yet understand why this is the case.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but feel intrigued as we’re piecing together fragments of Aidan’s past, who was once the love of someone’s life. Now that he’s regained consciousness, what secrets will he unveil about John’s enigmatic past? We know John has paid him visits during his coma and shared his deepest confessions – what details has Aidan managed to absorb? The news of Aidan’s awakening is the last thing John needs, so how will he handle this predicament?

Nate represents the broader situation, but right now it’s Aidan that needs our attention – things could escalate fast there. Both situations are significant. John deeply cares for Aaron and wishes for their marriage. He would sacrifice everything, including his sister Victoria and nephew Harry, to keep them safe. He can’t bear to lose them.

At the heart of John’s troubles lies a complex need to be perceived as a savior, which has grown into an almost compulsive desire. This obsession sometimes drives him to unintentionally harm people, so he can subsequently rescue them and bask in the accolades. Regrettably, this approach has resulted in several mishaps, such as the case of Nate, a patient John attended to as a paramedic following injuries from a fight. Tragically, Nate’s life was cut short due to an adverse reaction to the medication administered by John.

Apart from several questionable decisions, John has additionally concealed assaulting Dr. Liam Cavanagh and deliberately inducing an anaphylactic reaction in Jacob Gallagher, with the intention of later appearing as a hero. His craving for adrenaline is becoming increasingly excessive.

As a cinema enthusiast, I find myself deeply resonating with this character named John. You see, John yearns for love and acceptance, something we all crave, don’t we? However, his approach is quite unusual – he orchestrates situations to fulfill that need, often at the cost of other people’s safety. It’s as if he’s trying to create a world where he’s indispensable. In essence, John needs to feel needed.

Contrary to certain malevolent characters who’ve haunted the Dales like the ominous Meena Jutla, Farnworth assures that John isn’t a thrill-seeker when it comes to ending lives or concealing his actions. “I don’t portray him as an outright villain, reveling in causing pain. Instead, John acts from a place of survival and the need to preserve his self-respect, allowing him to navigate society. It’s refreshing to introduce a touch of vulnerability into his character, which is only visible to the viewers but hidden from those around him.

John is flexible in various situations, presenting a robust demeanor to achieve his goals and exert control. Having constructed this self-image, he feels reluctant to expose his vulnerability to his loved ones, as it might be perceived as weakness. The fear of rejection looms large, as it seems too late for truthfulness now.

Over a year ago, I stumbled upon the Sugdens, Emmerdale’s founding family, who were recently reintroduced to the show. What I didn’t know then was that this newcomer was the love child of the late Jack Sugden, a secret conceived in the 1980s during a fleeting romance. This unexplored aspect of Jack’s past sheds light on why John, his son, has always felt disconnected from his father. Farnworth skillfully weaves this backstory into John’s narrative, revealing the events that forged his troubled spirit.

It’s likely he was a soft-spoken, empathetic child who felt neglected and forsaken by his father. Joining the military provided him with companionship, as he was surrounded by fellow soldiers and thrived in the masculine atmosphere. Above all, the military offered John a sense of belonging, like being part of a family.

Initially, he appeared as a solitary traveler, leading a transient, business-oriented lifestyle, journeying solo in his campervan. His arrival in Emmerdale rekindled his feelings.

Initially, spectators were perplexed by John’s mysterious personality, and it wasn’t until later that Farnworth received gradual revelations about the extended storyline. This narrative has evolved gradually into a captivating saga with escalating tension, despite the fact that filming scenes for a future flashback gave the actor a glimpse of what was to come.

In the beginning of our filming, we captured John murdering Nate since Jurell, who portrayed Nate, had already departed from set. His character would then be absent for several months in the storyline, but we didn’t know the details of his fate until later.

In my recent review, after just a few short weeks immersed in this captivating tale, it’s become evident that a sinister undercurrent is unfolding for our protagonist, John. The writers have masterfully crafted the narrative, skillfully integrating John into the very essence of the village, a decision I wholeheartedly appreciate. However, as any seasoned storyteller knows, to truly savor the pay-off, one must first lay a solid foundation.

Developing a character is similar to painting a picture: you begin with a foundation, apply subsequent layers, and make minor adjustments as needed. This reflects the way characters evolve and adapt to their environment.

With a charm reminiscent of the neighbor from next door, yet subtly hinting at a darker undertone, Yorkshire-native Farnworth swiftly rose to become a top-tier star in Emmerdale.

Previously recognized among soap opera enthusiasts due to his role as tragic character Andy Carver on Coronation Street, he met an apparent end at the hands of villain Pat Phelan in 2017. However, it was later unveiled that Andy had miraculously survived, making a shocking return in one of Corrie’s most memorable plot twists in recent years.

Eventually, Farnworth experienced a setback, but this experience eased his return to the familiar grind of daily life, making it less rough.

Working on both Corrie and Emmerdale shares a lot of technical aspects, which is beneficial as you already know the ropes. This allows for a smooth start. The pace is exhilarating; each day presents new challenges with filming at multiple locations, handling extensive dialogue – it’s a rigorous mental exercise. It can be exhausting, but I sleep soundly after that!

Farnworth kick-started his screen acting journey in the soap operas sphere as early as 2006, even during his studies. The character of Will Hackett, the stalker, in Hollyoaks prompted a significant turn in his life.

He shares that he departed from drama school a month ahead of schedule to join the cast of Hollyoaks. “I’d already begun auditions and was thrust into the world of working in front of a camera,” he explains. “It was quite an education. I felt fortunate to learn as I went along, spending around eight months there and having a blast. Will was a shady character with an enigmatic air – I guess I have one of those faces!

It’s reasonable to conclude that Farnworth benefited significantly from leaving drama school early, given his consistent work in both stage and screen performances over the past two decades. He has shared the limelight with prominent Hollywood stars like Jeremy Piven in Mr Selfridge, as well as British television icons on the Coronation Street set – among these collaborations, which one had the most profound effect?

In the past, I performed in a play called Kes alongside Mike Burnside, an exceptionally talented actor with a traditional RADA education. His performances were always impeccable.
