Emmerdale’s Michael Parr teases Ross Barton and Kim Tate clash as the bad boy returns

As a lifelong soap opera enthusiast who has seen more than my fair share of comings and goings in the small screen world, I must admit that I was thrilled to hear about Ross Barton‘s return to Emmerdale. Having followed his turbulent journey since his debut back in 2013, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I watched him stride back into the village that has seen more drama than a Shakespearean stage.

Six years after he left Emmerdale, bad boy Ross Barton is back.

In a surprising turn of events, the character came back with a bang when it was announced he would be Billy Fletcher’s adversary in an underground bout. This revelation prompted Ross to step foot in the village again for the first time since 2018.

How does it feel to be back in Emmerdale?

I’m really enjoying myself as there’s still that cozy family atmosphere present. It’s surprising how much fun I’ve been having playing Ross again, given he’s such a handful! Additionally, it’s delightful to be back up in Leeds as a northerner – except for my time in Emmerdale previously, I haven’t lived here since I was 15.

Did you ever think you’d play Ross again?

No, I really thought that was the end in 2018, but thankfully they never killed him off! When they asked me, I actually had another job lined up and had to choose, but my heart and home is with Emmerdale. I watched old clips to remind myself of Ross and his little mannerisms – he’s quite flamboyant and likes to put some panache into things. And he’s very rude, I couldn’t get away with being that obnoxious!

What’s in store for Ross this time round?

He’s always at war with somebody so there’ll be a lot of trouble, and a lot of flirting because he likes the girls as much as he likes fighting! He comes back in with a bang and makes his presence known in the village.

Who will he clash with?

By his very character, Ross tends to have conflicts with almost everyone! It’s not just his long-time adversary, Cain, but also Kim Tate, whom he hadn’t interacted with before. The Tate family played a role in Ross receiving the acid attack scars (originally intended for Kim’s step grandson Joe). Moreover, he’s had disputes with Aaron, and together they engage in underground fighting with Billy. Will their conflicts stay within the ring, or might they escalate beyond it? John Sugden could make an excellent enemy, and I eagerly anticipate scenes involving Ruby and Caleb. Ross seems to thrive in turbulence!

What about his relationship with Moira, who killed his mum?

Moira’s life is quite complicated due to her brain tumor, and it’s only as we delve further into Ross returning that you’ll notice how their relationship evolves. Unlike many others, Moira has faith in Ross, but his return could prove stressful for her. To Moira, Ross is like a wild card – he can either be extremely valuable or not so useful. Essentially, she sees him as having great potential to make a significant impact.

Is there romance on the horizon?

I’ve been filming some affectionate sequences, but I can’t reveal who they’re with! I wasn’t exactly taken aback by who Ross ends up with, yet I’m looking forward to it. There’s a tender aspect to Ross that you’ll notice as well in his relationship with Moses and the bond he shares with grown-up April.

What can you tease about the illegal fighting storyline?

Ross often finds himself in over his depth, as per usual. With his back pressed against the proverbial wall, he seems to shine most vividly. Jade, who oversees the fights, is an intimidating figure. Twinnie-Lee Moore’s portrayal exudes a chilling aura and adds a gritty realism to her character.

How long is Ross sticking around?

He’ll only be around temporarily, but the decision about his future beyond that lies with our talented creators. I hope I get to stick around, but in soap operas, things are unpredictable… During his stay, though, be prepared for intense drama, thrills, and plenty of action!

Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
