As a movie critic with a background in both psychology and animal welfare, I find myself drawn to stories that delve into the darker aspects of human nature and the complex bond between humans and their pets. The current storyline on Emmerdale featuring Tom King’s abusive behavior towards his wife Belle and their dog Piper is one such tale that strikes a chord with me.
heads up: this post contains information about domestic violence (including coercive control) and cruelty towards pets, which could be upsetting for certain readers.
In tonight’s Emmerdale on the 19th of August, 2024, Tom King (James Chase), issued a spine-tingling warning to his wife Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) after she discovered one of his brutal actions.
Following the unseen incident where Tom accidentally harmed their pet dog Piper, a cruel Tom delayed his action until Belle was around, then hastily took the injured dog to the vet’s office, asserting that he could miraculously save its life.
Meanwhile on the ITV soap, Tom pretended to be tired, insisting he’d spent the entire night trying to help Piper, and now it was time for them to part ways.
As a movie-lover, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of guilt on Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick), as she believed she had left the cottage gate open, which might have allowed Piper to stray onto the road. However, unbeknownst to her, it was Tom who orchestrated this sinister chain of events.
Belle showed deep sorrow as she kissed Piper affectionately and expressed her love, shortly before exiting the room. Following this, Tom was seen readying himself to administer a fatal injection to the cherished pet.
Collaborating with Emmerdale for this specific plot involving a grim narrative, Dogs Trust recently highlighted findings from their 2019 study which underscored the distressing fact that pets can frequently become victims of abuse by their abusers, sometimes even being killed. This method is often employed to exert control and intimidate within domestic settings.
It’s important to note that no dog was harmed in the making of the scenes and a behind-the-scenes of the filming process is being released on Emmerdale’s social channels.
After the devastating incident in the village, Tom conversed with Belle about the sad passing of their beloved pet. However, their conversation didn’t last long before Tom expressed his concerns about Belle’s emotional well-being, suggesting that she might struggle even more due to Piper’s demise.
Due to this, Belle came to the shocking understanding that Tom intentionally hit Piper with his car so he could be nearer to her. Belle remembered the ‘condition’ Tom fabricated before, which he used to make Belle return from the psychiatric hospital.
As Rhona Goskirk (played by Zoë Henry) drew near to Tom, Belle disclosed Tom’s unkind actions towards Piper, such as the instance when he kept the pet outside for a prolonged period.
1. Belle swore she’d never pardon Tom, while Rhona backed Tom up, claiming the accusations against him were painful. Rhona proposed taking care of Piper’s remains and approached Belle to discuss the matter.
Tom, who was rather unscrupulous, convincingly portrayed a devoted spouse, leading Rhona to believe without a doubt that he was indeed an innocent in the matter.
While Lydia was attempting to clarify her part in Piper’s downfall, Tom unexpectedly showed up, falsely claiming that he thought Belle was experiencing a recurrence of her condition. However, at the house, Belle persisted in accusing Tom, telling him she now clearly understood his true nature, and then instructed him to leave.
But in haunting scenes, Tom shouted Belle down and accused her of failing to care for Piper.
“I don’t love you,” Belle responded, while Tom warned her she would “regret this”.
“You want out of our marriage?” he asked. “Bring it on. Let’s see how that works out for you.”
Discussing the plot, Paula Boyden, the head of Dogs Trust, stated that the latest storyline featuring Belle, Tom, and Piper is extremely upsetting, yet it mirrors the sad reality we frequently encounter in our line of work.
As a movie enthusiast putting it in my own words, I’ve come across harrowing tales from individuals we stand by, who speak out about how abusers manipulate the bond between victims and their beloved pets to exert power and inflict harm. These perpetrators may prevent survivors from walking their dogs alone, deny them access to veterinary care for their pets, or restrict their ability to purchase food for their furry friends. They even go as far as making repeated threats to hurt or kill the pets. This chilling behavior leaves people feeling incredibly lonely and trapped.
Occasionally, abusers might acquire a pet for their partner, not out of affection, but to manipulate and trap them. They exploit the deep emotional connections that people often have with their cherished pets as a method of control.
She added: “People frequently hesitate to leave abusive environments due to concerns about their pets’ safety if abandoned. Regrettably, many shelters can’t accommodate pets. However, our Freedom team plays a crucial role by providing a temporary, secure foster home for dogs until their owners find a safe living situation.”
