Emmys: Why Fans Aren’t Happy With Jimmy Kimmel’s Bob Newhart Tribute

As a seasoned television enthusiast with over three decades of viewing under my belt, I must say that this year’s Emmy awards have truly outdone themselves! The winners in various categories are a testament to the rich tapestry of talent gracing our screens today.

Jimmy Kimmel is once again on the receiving end of some award show backlash.

On September 15, 2024, the Emmys ceremony took place, and directly after the In Memoriam segment, a comedian stepped onto the stage at the Peacock Theater located at L.A. Live in Los Angeles. This tribute was dedicated to his late friend and TV icon Bob Newhart who passed away in July at the age of 94. However, reactions on social media towards this tribute were divided.

Kimmel began his speech by saying, “Let’s honor the Emmy for the deceased industry professional we miss the most, which goes to…” He then continued, “This is when we pay tribute to those we’ve lost during the past year. One of these individuals was someone I was fortunate enough to know, and that was Bob Newhart.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host expressed fondly that those who knew Bob personally, as they suspected, found him just as they expected. Unlike many comedians today, Bob didn’t require a wide range of skills. What set Bob apart was an exceptional trait: He had a degree in accounting.

Kimmel subsequently commended the deceased actor from Elf, referring to him as a modest individual with an amusingly polite demeanor. Unfortunately, he had been overlooked by the Academy for quite some time.

He received his initial Emmy nomination in 1962 but didn’t win until 2013, a full 51 years later,” Kimmel pointed out, “[emphasizing] Jon Stewart, you should feel embarrassed for your actions. You said you were retiring.

In a more serious note, Kimmel stated, “For over six decades, Bob Newhart has been one of the most beloved and funniest individuals in our industry. We’ll deeply miss him for a long time.

Following its airing, certain viewers criticized Jimmy Kimmel’s humorous speech that followed the In Memoriam tribute.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I recently found myself reflecting on a moment during Jimmy Kimmel’s show. Following a heartfelt recognition of the industry professionals who have sadly passed away, an ill-timed joke was shared, leaving many viewers feeling disheartened. One user on this platform (originally known as Twitter) expressed their sentiment saying, “Jimmy Kimmel just told the most inappropriate joke after a somber moment.” Another individual voiced their disappointment by stating, “I’m sorry, but I no longer find Jimmy Kimmel amusing… It was neither tasteful nor fitting to make that joke following such an emotional ‘In Memoriam’ performance by Jelly Roll.

In the meantime, a different user expressed their opinion by saying, “Jimmy Kimmel still isn’t funny to me. It was just awkward. I mean, what is he trying to say? Yuck, it’s so cheesy.
